Hi guys

The wife has decided she wants to joing the gta fun, she is going to play on the tv in the games room (1080p) and i will be throwing together a gaming cube for the tv, i have a 2500k kicking about that i will probably use. I want to get as close to my 980 performance as possible but understand its not going to happen. However wondered what peoples thoughts are on beast cards for gta. Ideally £200 but not fussed if goes over a little bit. Not too fussed going seconds hand either. Maybe second hand 970 ?

New R9 290 you can get for £210

second hand maybe a 970/980/290X

He probably doesn't need to spend this much to play GTA* comfortably. Onboard graphics should do it pretty well. If on the other hand he wants to play one of the newer iterations of the series, such as GTA V, then a 290 for 210 sheets would be a good plan, assuming the PSU can cope.

* apologies for mock pedantry :p

well i assumed he wanted to spend £200 not up to :) from hes OP

sure he could get a 260X but you might aswell get somthing thats going to last... :P

Used 290X / GTX780 / 970 seems like the best bet. If not a new 290 at slightly more than £200.

At 1080p all should perform around the same level (and feel similar to the 980 as well) - assuming that the drivers are up to scratch (I don't own GTA5 on PC so can't comment in that regard).

My attempt at humour was lost. The OP only mentioned playing GTA (I.e. the first in the series from 15 years back or whenever), for which onboard graphics would be overkill.

If he wants to play GTA 5 then your suggestion of a 290 is a good plan :)

No no no I meant the original birds eye view gta ;)

GTA V obviously lol. The 980 is munching it with everything of maximum and looks amazing. I have to say I'm looking for something that is cool too as it's going into a very small case, PSU no problem 750watt PSU currently (seasonic) well it's what I have kicking about again. I don't "want" to spend £200 but I want the maximum possible graphics detail as possible @1080p 60fps. I'm leaning towards a 970 as I have owned one in the past and it was very cool and quiet. However I'm not to worried about going down the amd route I'm just not a fan of their driver software but I guess I can live with that. That being said I also like new hardware so a 290 would keep me happy on that side of the fence. Tbh is only ever going to play GTA V and the sims (latest one no idea on what number that is)

What case are you using for this ?

I have tried my R9 290 in a BitFenix Prodigy and it gets fairly hot and generates a lot of noise (reference 290)

Id say if you can find a GTX970 or R9 290 (with a good non reference cooler for ~£200) go for one of those ...

if not (as the tv is normal FHD) you could get an R9 280 or GTX960 and still have good performance AND save a little money

From a few graphs I've seen the 290x is close to 980 performance on GTA v, also the bigger vram is also a bonus ove rthe 970. If going 290 pcs, vapour x, lightning are the quietest/coolest.

GTA V at 1920x1080, i'd look no less than a GTX780/GTX780TI. An AMD 290 would be a good shout for performance/price ratio.

Im running fine on my setup in my Sig.. all High settings and 2xMSAA.. 40fps -60fps (vsync on) all the way :) I guess i cud tweak some stuff and im not using the AMD shadows as i think they look crap, using Soft option.

So from my experience with a 7950 i'd go for a 290 4gb card cuz even when i'm dipping to 40fps its still smooth.

Cheers Guys given me plenty to think about, i just remembered i have a waterblock for a 970 in the cupboard! So i might look at a 970 and do a loop for the cpu and gpu in the future. Failing finding a decent price 970 try a 290
