You could try taking it off and giving it a good clean. There might be some gunk in that's stopping it moving all the way.

Might do that at the weekend, ill try giving it another clean and see how I get on.

Dont wana have to take it off if I can help it as I don't wana take the chain off. Not until it needs replacing, how much use do chains go through before being changed?

On the upside after tomorrow mornings commute home I will have done 7700ft of climbing this week in 110miles! Most climbing I've ever done in a week. Gonna be fit as a fiddle soon haha, noticing going up hill is a lot faster nowadays which is good :D doesn't feel as painful although my legs are actually shot now!

My goals this month are 500km minimum for the ATS, 4500m on the Strava climbing challenge, 750km on the specialised challenge and I wanted the Gran Fondo 100 but it's not available this month :( looks like I'm gonna hit the 3 goals I set myself!

My rear derailleur still isn't going all the way back by itself, heard a little bit of clicking/resistance when I pushed it up a little further, it's not far away from where it should be.

Any ideas?

Dirt/grime in the spring which pulls it back?

No worries, glad to help!

Those who recommended steephill.tv I'm really not comfortable giving my creditcard details for 'verification' to the services it uses (sportingvideo.tv etc) is there any way around it or something I'm doing wrong?

Chain lifetime varies depending on the chain, the conditions you ride in, how well cleaned and lubricated you keep it... 3000 miles might be a reasonable guess, but you can't say for sure without using a chain checker. They cost a few quid on ebay or Wiggle, or you can just use a ruler, there's instructions around the web on how to check.

3000 miles I would personally say is at the upper end of chain life for 10 speed and above but as Von says it really depends on a ton of factors.

Other people would say their chains last longer than 3000 miles so... *shrug*

hey all

remember me ? :D

I have been staying away from this thread because im still not out on the bike

My back is still niggling away, and I now feel that if I got on the bike it would get worse, and im now being more careful at work etc

First metric century today, long overdue some might say. Way more elevation than i was expecting though. The road i took on the way back thinking it would be easier than the way i came turned out to be the worst road for cycling. Just endless downhills, fords and then loong 1 in 6 or 1 in 7 gradients. Really took it out of me for the rest of the ride, was crawling along for the last 10k. Good to get it out the way though ;)

my last 10 speed chain had around 2200 miles in it when it died of stiff links, it wasn't that worn.

Most of my routes are just hills, continuously.

800ft to work, 1200ft home. If I go for longer rides on my days off you're talking 1200ft minimum. I push it every day, take it easy 1 in 30-50 rides doing between 50-110 miles a week and trying to up that.

Rode through the bad weather earlier this year and back end of last year before taking time off through Injury last year.

I've done about 750 on the roadie and its running smooth as, little rattle from the front every now and then but nothing major.

The chain feels really flexible and smooth, no stiffness or other issues but I think the rear mech may need attention which will be this weekend.

I haven't cleaned it half as much as I should have through ignorance of not knowing how often I need to but that's changed now, it's fortnightly cleaned, decreased and relubed :)

I need to get out for a metric, did 58 mile sportive last year that's about as close as I've got! Done a few 40 milers since. Planning to do one soon though! My target is to do a 100 miler this year.

You don't need to brake the chain the take the RD off, just take the 2 jockey wheels out and that will release the chain. I took my RD off for the same reason you want too the other week.

You don't need to brake the chain the take the RD off, just disassemble the lower cage in situe and that will release the chain. I took my RD off for the same reason you want too the other week.

Will it just come off and go back on again perfectly as it were? No tweaking?

New wheels.
Not sure I will keep the decals on. Ended up a bit of a bargain. £300.

Took them out for a spin tonight. Not sure I like them :(
My first set of deeper rims and the ride is much harsher than my alloy rims. I felt every bump! Which was a bit disconcerting. Had the tyres pumped up to 90psi. It might be that I have not fitted the tube and tyre properly on the rear (tyre was a cow to go on) and maybe the valve isnt seating properly causing a bump. I'll take it off again and reseat!

Maybe less pressure will smooth things out a bit.

That's odd. My cheapo Chinese carbon deep rims felt much smoother than my old wheels. Possibly I'm just used to really really bad wheels though.

Well done! That's a fair chunk of elevation!
