How much better is i5 4960k than my Fx8320 4.3ghz?

HI everyone just wondering while I'm swapping motherboards how much would i benefit from a i5 4960k with a R9 290 tri-x oc. At the moment I'm getting around 20-40 fps on gta V with the FX and anywhere between 120-30 fps on battlefield 4. (Upgrading motherboard to try fix the random fps drops) what kind of solid fps would I bet getting with a i5 4960k? On some of the more current games.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using a FX8320 overclocked to 4.3ghz on a asus m5a78lm usb3. The cpu is throttling sometimes down to under 2ghz. But sometimes games will play at full 4.3ghz. I'm thinking of upgrading to a sabretooth 990fx but don't want to spend money on something that won't cure my fps problems. I'd rather spend more money on a i5 and new mobo and know it's going to give me a solid rig. Everyone I have spoken to so far says it will outperform the fx by miles but how true is this?

Won't magically speed up all games by miles but for GTA V you will pretty much double your framerate with a 290 as things stand.

If your spending money out on a new setup I'd definitely go i5 if you can overall for gaming it is the better performing choice often noticeably so.

Sabertooth is a great board, although I was in a similar situation but with a 6300 and I upgraded to an I5, which did help me in the games I was playing at the time.
I still think it was definetly the best choice, when you take the money for the sabertooth and sell your mobo and cpu, shouldn't cost you loads more.

Hi Ios are you still using the i5? If so how is it keeping up with current games? And how much did it improve over your amd? It's just to be getting drops down to under 30 fps in battlefield with a 290 seems to be ridiculously low.

Just wondering snips if those benchmarks are at stock speeds? That's kind of improvement I'd be looking at straight out of the box without oc?

Are you using Mantle?

I had a 2500k with my 290 and it was mint, I had no complaints and BF3/4 was just buttery smooth. I'd imagine Haswell/DC would be better in comparison.

Yes, they're stock speeds. You'd need to look for specific benchmarks for the i5 to see how it fares up against the AMD chips, but I can guarantee you, you'll not be disappointed :D You'll get some serious gaines when you overclock. Example, my 4790k is running at 4.7ghz on a vCore boost of no more than +0.030, so v1.235. I can do 4.5ghz at stock, v1.2.

Yes snips that fps was while using mantle on a 60+ player game.the funny thing is while playing thief using mantle I don't drop below 60fps at all? Yet every over game does. I've been looking at a deal online that includes a z97k mobo i5 4690k and 8gb vengeance black memory for £350. Is this a good price?

As observed the anand benches are at stock speed so the AMD will close the gap a bit as it's got much more overclocking headroom.

If you go to a 9590 then you can see what it's like then the AMD CPU is at 4.7GHz so slightly faster than yours: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1289?vs=1261 The i5 is still slightly better but it's close. Unfortunately this still has the i5 at stock! It's hard to compare them with the i5 also well clocked as there is no ~4.4GHz i5 option on the anand benches, but you can see the general idea - imagine all those i5 scores with up to an extra 25% (some things don't gain as much as that but still).

On price OCUK isn't currently competitive for the 4690k unfortunately, but the mobo and other components can be bought from here just fine. £350 is pretty steep, about £320 for mobo, CPU & ram seems more reasonable.

Thanks for the replys everyone! I'll be looking into the i5 then hopefully get one ordered next week :). Also wondering if the 8gb ram I already have is plenty for games out there at the moment? Could save myself some more money there if so.

Give it a go at 8GB, given your current throttling problems on top of the difference in CPUs it should be a pretty enormous step up! If you feel you're lacking RAM or whatever after that then you can always choose to upgrade that then.

if your monitor is 60Hz and your hitting 60FPS in games the improvement will feel 0%.

my sig rig is my main rig monitor is 60Hz and i get BF4 at 60FPS all is good. My other rig is phenom2 965 and 7950. i get 60PFS on a 60Hz tv the feel in games is the same.
Both are set to high pre set with Vsync on.

boot, installing games, internet and so on all feel a hell of a lot faster on the intel, but that could be down to the SSD.
Nothing wrong with your AMD chip stick with it untill the new stuff comes out then upgrade is you must. also turn of one core in every module of the CPU there is a real boost in performance, it will also drop temps and stop the throttling.

Your very bad fps sound to me like a bad overclock to me. if i get a solid 60 in BF4 with a 965 and 7950 your should be ripping it up. when i had 290x i hit 170fps all the time

Sadly you have an exteremely poor choice of motherboard for that CPU :/

I moved from an FX6300 at 4.3 to an I5.Its totally worth it IMO if you value a solid 60fps with consisitant frame times and no stutter.

In your case,if your tight on cash,it might be worth looking for at grabbing a different mobo(990 chipset) for your CPU 2nd hand.Would get rid of your throttleing and allow for some OCing.

Another thing I'd like to point out is I checked the asus website for the motherboard I currently have and there was a bios update for "Fx8320 instability issues" after updating to this bios I've noticed my gpu usage goes up to around 100/90% while gaming. Where as before the bios update It would be constantly dropping from 100% to 10% and straight back up. Could this be bottleneck from my cpu? I mean if my gpu is pretty much working flat out but not getting a constant 60fps in games? Surely it's cpu related?. I bought this pc as a ready made rig (some people say bad move) I upgraded from a gtx750 to the tri-x and while the frame rates are still considerably higher than the gtx on higher settings. It's just not what I was expecting. Maybe the fx isn't a bad gaming cpu. But I'm pretty sure I should go the Intel route .
