GTX 560 TI Upgrade - GTX770 or GTX960?

I don't post on here often but I am looking to upgrade my Graphics Card which i have had for a few years now and is just starting to show it's age on a few of the latest games.

I game @ 1080p on a Pionner Kuro Plasma so I don't need a card for any higher resolutions.

My system is an I5 4690k, 8GB Ram and Corsair 520 PSU

My budget is between £150 to £170 tops and after a bit of research I have narrowed it down to 2 cards:

GTX 960

GTX770

I really like the look of the 770 but on checking a few reviews it seems like the 960 is at least as good @ 1080p and with the lower power usage and less heat is this the one to go for?

I know that the 960 gets a bad rep on here but @ 1080p should it be OK and surely a nice upgrade over the 560TI?

Cheers

I'm not sure about exact comparisons between the two but I own an evga 960 and it was a good deal with the witcher 3 thrown in.

The fans don't even turn on when playing Diablo 3, so it is a nice quiet card to boot.

Having said that, perhaps a better second hand card might suit...other people could better advise.

The 960 itself is not a bad card...the problem was it was a semi-decent entry level card that should have been sold at £120-£130 got overpriced to mid-range level of £170+ at launch. Now that it is at £150 and comes with Witcher 3, it is not that bad a deal.

The 770 would still be faster (for now), but you have to also consider the aspect that it now cost more than the 960, and also as time goes on, the 960 will gain more performance increase with driver support, while the 700 have pretty much already been neglected by Nvidia and not much more further performance you would expect to see on them cards.

Performance wise, the 960 is at 670~680 level. But if you got £150-£170 to spend, it might worth you try getting a 2nd hand GTX780, as it would be like 40% faster and with 1GB more vram comparing to the 960.

Thanks for the replies, this mid range £150 to £170 range seems to be tricky!

It doesn't have to be an Nvidia card but I have always had this brand and I have always thought the drivers are much better than ATI.

I think I'm leaning towards the 960 as it is the newer card and is going in a PC which is used as a htpc so I'm guessing it will be pretty quiet?

I'd go for the 960 just for future proofing

Puzzled by things like this because no gfx card is really future proof. I've had a 560ti for what 4 years now and it still pretty much plays everything I want. The only reason I have just bought the 780ti is because the fps on certain games is getting lower and lower. For me personally the 960/970 are both overpriced for what they are and do hence the reason I bought a better card for a lower price , just because it "old" tech. I've had NVIDIA cards all the time but at that price point I can't see how the NVIDIA competes with AMD.

GFX cards last as long as "you" want them to nothing to do with future proofing.
