I had the intention of purchasing this lens to use with my 7D but seeing as it's only compatible with cropped sensors, it will cause me a problem when I upgrade to a 6D.

I'm after a suitable alternative, and it'll mainly be used for landscape and the odd portrait.

Personally I'd just buy what you need now and not for may or may not happen in the future and there is no real alternative to the 18-35 on crop as Sigma has managed to carve a market all of its own.

I agree with above.
I bought a Canon 17-40 with the intention of going full frame but that didn't happen for 10 years.

Cheers and that had crossed my mind. I've been told the Sigma is quite incredible, which suggests I should just keep the 7D!

This, buy what you need now, if and when you upgrade then sell it on.

there is no alternative that will work for both that offers the same aperture. Closest alternative would be a canon 16-35mm f/2.8 but it really makes no sense as the canon 17-55mm f/2.8 is going to be much better on crop.

Yeah there isn't really anything else like the 18-35mm since everything else is a compromise on something.
