Ok so I am very confused right now.

Just had a chat with Microsofts online tech support about something unrelated, but then he mentioned upgrading to Windows 8.1. He went through the benefits of 8.1 over 7 and that 8.1 will have the Win10 upgrade. I said Win7 will have it too will it not, and he said Win7 and Win8 will only get an technical preview upgrade, not the full one. Only 8.1 will get that.

Here is my conversation:

Graciano G:
18:20:38 You know if you have Windows 8.1 you can have privileges to upgrade it into Windows 10
You:
18:20:52 Windows 7 gets the upgrade too does it not?
Graciano G:
18:21:02 And I believe it is less than buying the full version of Windows 10
for Windows 7 only the Windows 10 Technical Preview but not the full version which I believe it will be released rd or 4th quarter of this year
(3rd)
You:
18:22:44 Wait...that is the first I am hearing of this?! I thought that all Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are entitled to the full upgrade to Windows 10 upon release? At least that is what everywhere online and your press release has said?!
Graciano G:
18:23:50 As far as I know if I'm not mistaken only Windows 8.1 have that privileges , For Windows 10 TP that includes both Windows 7 and 8 and 8.1
You:
18:25:20 Oh...
That is worrying
Graciano G:
18:25:59 So I would suggest and recommend if you can have atleast one Windows 8.1 with you , you can have that privileges already to test that when the full version of Windows 10 release.
You:
18:26:30 Well...that is news to me
Graciano G:
18:26:39 I understand
You:
18:27:01 and a lot of other people are going to be really annoyed
Graciano G:
18:27:15 And I know it is most awaited version the coming of Windows 10
You:

And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge. Sign up with your email today, and we will send you more information about Windows 10 and the upgrade offer in the coming months.
That is from your own website
So is your website incorrect?
Graciano G:
18:28:18 Yes and I believe this is the Windows 10 TP or Technical Preview
You:
18:28:41 Erm...isnt that false advertising?
(sorry I know we have digressed)
Graciano G:
18:29:52 I understand and I do apologize for that
However as many other says that Windows 8.1 is more compatible in upgrading into Windows 8.1

So did he just not know, or does he speak the truth? Have I missed something?

Talking rubbish.

*Windows Offer Details

It is our intention that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the Internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit of upgrading to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer and support terms in coming months.

He's talking utter nonsense. You don't even need Microsoft's word to realise either. Microsoft isn't going to offer an upgrade only to an incomplete pre-release version of Windows that's supposed to be for developers who want to start Windows 10 development early, as an upgrade to a gold release OS.

Yea I get that, hence why I started to ask questions about it to him. As you can see even when I quoted their own website he said it was wrong.

I thought I was right, just needed to be sure.

He's only doing it because he wants your money. From the sounds of the last line of the convo though he's probably referring to the actual upgrade process which most people will probably do instead of a clean install.

Win7 and Win8.1 get the free upgrade.

Win8 needs to be upgraded to Win8.1 before the upgrade can take place.

Isn't he mixing the full release up with the Tech Preview? As currently you can 'upgrade' Windows 8.1 to 10 Tech Preview, this is not available for Windows 7/8.

Reading the convo looks like that's what he is trying to say.

Thats what I said to him but he disagreed.

I agree that he was just trying to sell me Win8.1, but he really was avoiding the question of the upgrade too.

A bit of an aside issue, however it's semi related.

If you did & can upgrade to Win10 would that mean your current OS licence key from whatever you upgraded from, Windows 7 / 8 or 8.1 whichever, then becomes invalid e.g. there's no way back?

I am a bit confused about this too. I would presume that you would upgrade and your licence would become Win10. If you needed to reinstall Win10 you would use your key and download the relevant media to do so. I think Win7, 8 or 8.1 would come to an end.

Thanks

Exactly what I think too, no way back. TBH after changing from XP to Win 7 was a big deal for me.

I was going from one to the other for about 10 months before I finally managed to quit XP for good. (An age thing I guess) :o

my company does PC and hardware support for dental practices and there is still loads running XP lol

I've had three different employers since I graduated in 2008 and they were/are all still using XP. My current one is switching to 8.1 over the next few months.

my work recently went from XP to windows 7.

had dell PC's before running XP and changed to the HP Z81 systems with a quadro 4000 GPU and a 6 core 8 thread xeon processor and also got 2 x 24" HD monitors as well.

To be honest Windows XP still runs a computer and is fully capable of doing what most end users want, so of course they are not going to spend the money to upgrade. Most end users don't know enough about the security implications to care and even if they do, it does not bother them all that much.

Then there is compatibility issues with custom software, users not liking change, the time and cost of upgrading all those machines...

With regards to upgrading Windows licenses, yes you move to the new license, but your old license will still work if you decide to go back. It does not suddenly stop working because you have upgraded.

What you cannot do is use your old license on another PC (leaving the upgrade license on your main PC) or sell it on.
