How many here grew up in state housing?

Yep, lovely 3 bed terrace that my father later bought. Zero stigma in those days, it was normal to live in council housing.

Yup - council house here. 3 bedroom semi.
My parents were always "just under" where they needed to be wage wise to afford to buy. Even when "right to buy" came along they couldn't quite afford it.
Certainly no stigma that I know of.

Shouldn't be any stigma these days either. I haven't seen my neighbours since I was 4 but still remember how amazing they were. One potentially saved my life.

In a council house until I was 18 and moved out of Stoke. Strangely I'd completely lost my accent within 5 years and now sound like some posh brummie type :eek:

Lie detected :D hahahahaha

I grew up in a council house in a rough area and parted when I was 18. I have my flaws but im not selling crack or scrumping for cars!

Dissing me yard like?!

I grew up in endz for 15 years m8, i'm from the street init blud.

Seriously, I grew up in various council estates in Nottingham, it sure did me a lot of harm and would not ever want my own children to grow up in those areas.

I am ashamed also, not a single person in my social circle has lived on a council estate yet they all have "you don't know what its like so don't **** them off" attitude when I say bad things about council estates, makes me smile and I don't admit....dirty little child poverty secret.

You iz St Annes blud? lol

Yes, in Urmston when it was nice (before the Moss side regeneration where they moved their residents to Urmston / Stretford.

In some respects i think living on a council estate is better than other ways as i found there was always a great community spirit on estates and everyone looked out for each other because everyone was in the same boat. I just don't see that where i live now. I have seen my neighbour a couple of times and spoken to them once since i moved here in January.

Not Nether Wasdale btw, that is a lovely village, i moved to Egremont which is about 10 miles away.

Yes;
Shelter in Camden Town for 6 weeks;
Cavendish mansions, Clerkenwell for 2 years;
Brunswick Centre, Russell Square for 10 years.

The top one was horrendous, the bottom two were absolutely fantastic. Mother had the opportunity to buy the two storey maisonette we lived in Foundling Court, Brunswick Centre in '88 for between 80k - 100K I vaguely recall, which was with the 70% tenancy discount. Instead we moved via a mutual exchange to a 3 bedroom semi-detached in Chelmsford and bought that for 30k. ho-hum.

posh brummie type :eek:

There is no such thing as a posh brummie!!! :p:p:p

My parents bought their own house when I was 2 so never lived in a council house. To be honest, where I lived within a short walk was 2 or 3 council house estates, and I found them all quite run down, kids no older than 2 playing out the front on the road in summer, often with no pants or nappys on, just bare ass etc. The houses were more often than not neglected and the houses all looked typically crap.

I've just looked at the places in question on google maps and I haven't been down these roads for about 12-15 years. They look like they have been cleaned up a fair bit now on google street view. I know they are still mostly council owned though.

Moved to state housing in London from N Ireland in late 80's because of the troubles.

Me and older bro have now bought it, renting it out to polish immigrants.

Council Housing all my life, until last November when I bought the family council house.

Well done! :D

My grandmother lived in the same council house in Hounslow for about 50 years. She left it last year to move in with an aunt, but she never bought the damn thing!!! My mother and all my aunts were raised there, and I never knew my grandmother to live elsewhere, so it's really quite sad. It's so strange to think that someone else just moved in as soon as she left, completely unaware of the history my family has there....all the things my Grandad made and the writing my mum did on the shed and all sorts. Sad times!
