Tesco in crisis

"One adviser to Tesco said the retailer was likely to report at least £6bn in writedowns related to property valuations, inventory and other fixed-asset impairments, with the company expected to outline its plans to plug a multi-billion pound pension scheme deficit."

So aside from the pension the rest is in non cash adjustments to the balance sheet.

Pretty much, trading profits are still 1.3 billion.

I would prefer Aldi/Lidl over Asda any day of the week.Saying that I tend to pop in to whatever supermarket is closest at the time, and end up spending far too much money as a result.
Wonder how many people will be culled at Tesco as a result of this. :(

I've been visiting butchers in towns and villages nearby recently and have found food with a taste you just don't get from supermarkets. Bit more expensive though but it is worth it.

This is essentially a paper loss rather than an actual loss. I'm assuming they will bounce back next year now the big write downs are done.

bring back local butchers!

Are you sure you don't have any nearby? I live in a small village between two towns with massive supermarkets, loads of Tesco Extras etc. and it has two butchers in our local high street. If I'm honest I can't really tell the difference between much of the butchers meat and that of the meat counter at the supermarket.

The quality is an issue for me as well.

With the hours I work I use to often grab a microwave meal but stopped buying them at Tesco.

The chicken was like rubber in the curries and Chinese food. Look at the ingredients and you find they have sourced it in Vietnam. I haven't got anything against Vietnam but I kind of doubt they conform to the same standards and welfare as the UK.

The hot counter in Tesco's I also feel is far below the standard of Sainsbury's.

To top it off I don't find Tesco any cheaper nowadays so I find myself taking my business elsewhere as I can get better quality for the same money.

most farms in rural areas sell cheese , meat and bread around the outskirts of Newcastle, doubt it's much different anywhere else.

probably cheaper than the supermarket too

I'm trying to think where there are Tescos in Edinburgh....hmmm not many.

I know of a few Tesco locals, and I know where one big supermarket is but it seems Asda and Sainsburys have the largest amount of big shops here.

Then you have morrisons, Aldi/Lidl etc. Tesco doesn't have the monopoly here.

Waitrose is a nice place, but a rip off.

I went shopping at a Waitrose in Leicester a few weeks back to see what all the hype was about and to be honest, they just sell branded stuff but at full price with a few Waitrose 'special' items dotted around the store.

I have a high class butchers within walking distance of where I live and they sell the best sausage rolls i've ever tasted and do an assortment of family sized pies for around £2.50 each which are full of meat and are far superior to any Tesco finest pie.

M&S seem to be the market leader for quality in my opinion.

I would love to see a local butchers in our area, would rather go here than a supermarket.

This is why I rely on online butchers - it's a little pricer than the supermarket but so much better quality wise. With other butchers I've had in the past you can build up a good relationship and they'll often give you a discount or save you your favourite cut of meat - this is something I miss too.

OT but which online butchers do you use? I think my body is close to rejecting chicken due to the amount i'm eating right now just to hit my protein macros :(
