How're Nintendo doing financially?

Very well. They get a lot of cash from the handheld market , and despite the consoles not fairing well they are cheap to produce so the margins are pretty decent for them. I believe they are expected to make a profit this year from all reports.

Don't underestimate how much money they are sitting on from the enormous success of the Wii. They are rolling in cash.

Loss making since 2012 but they have billions in the bank so can ride out the storm. WiiU has picked up this last year and with the new 3DS should be back to profit this year and they have a new system (Nintendo NX) in the offing.

Market capitalisation is just the total value of their shares. They could be massively in debt and losing money at a rate of knots and still have a huge market cap.

Not to say they aren't doing well.....but market cap is no indicator of the health of a company. Example : Twitter's market cap is 37 billion, and they are just peeing money down the drain.

But if the NX is a flop, which given history it might be then they'll have little investor confidence and it'll stagnate.

Nintendo do far too many stupid things, and they really need to change their horrible practices. It seems to me they think they are better than everyone else, hence why they can have their own set of rules.

They need to take a different tack with the NX. The success of the Wii was a one-off and the WiiU, while a decent machine with some good games, is pretty much another GameCube. Nintendo need to stop relying on the reputation they built with the nes, snes and N64 and produce another console equally as worthy - which means competing with Sony and MS head-on and making games for gamers again.

Arguably they are, especially when it comes to the quality of their first party games and general lack of fear to break the mould. They are behind in terms of raw hardware power but this hasn't affected the quality of their games, just the third party support which I think puts many people off as having it as an only console.

All that money and a dwindling fanbase, at least they'll be ok churning out the same game on each new generation of console they make for the die hard fans.

No reason for them to be in trouble just because the Wii U isn't a runaway success in the west...as long as they aren't running it as a massive loss leader. They can be a perfectly healthy business making their extremely popular brands work for them, without being the size of or taking risks that other players do.

Nintendo aren't going to know what to do with the money once the mobile/tablet software sales start rolling in.

Nintendo didn't build a reputation with their hardware, they built it with Donkey Kong and Mario, which started out in the arcades and Game and Watch.
The only way to play their franchises, is on their own hardware. And THAT is how Nintendo turn such a huge profit.
They don't need to compete directly, when they annihilate the competition indirectly.
