Tesco in crisis

If Tescos are doing so badly how come every Saturday afternoon my local Tesco Extra is absolutely rammed with the most awful of people, filling their trolleys over the brim with all manner of tasteless junk food?

Also, here's an idea if Tesco management are reading. Hire some more people with regular shift patterns. I only had a small basket of goods yet I still had to queue for ages at the self-service tills because every other till was unmanned

OT but which online butchers do you use? I think my body is close to rejecting chicken due to the amount i'm eating right now just to hit my protein macros :(

For bulk buying I use musclefood, but donald Russell is good, westingourmet, field and flower, greatbritishmeat are all those I have tried and like them all.

Have a friend who worked at Tesco head office (last day was Friday), had only been there a few years (less than 5) and got a 6 month voluntary redundancy package (one of many offered voluntary). No wonder it's costing them so much.

I've got a musclefood box coming tomorrow, better quality and lower price than supermarkets, I highly recommend them.

I went shopping at a Waitrose in Leicester a few weeks back to see what all the hype was about and to be honest, they just sell branded stuff but at full price with a few Waitrose 'special' items dotted around the store.

I have a high class butchers within walking distance of where I live and they sell the best sausage rolls i've ever tasted and do an assortment of family sized pies for around £2.50 each which are full of meat and are far superior to any Tesco finest pie.

M&S seem to be the market leader for quality in my opinion.

I agree M&S is the best, just too bad they don't deliver, so I have to buy Waitrose from Ocado.

The Tesco website is awful.

I can't stand their pricing.
all this yellow label and 3 for 2

you are scared to buy anything other than yellow label in case you are being ripped off
they are well know to say a packet of biscuits are normally £2 but look yellow label they are half price. when really they are only worth £1 anyway

My biggest problem with tesco these days is the amount of crap they've got in the large stores. Unbranded TV's, electronics that are overpriced and old hat. With online shopping so easy these days, it's clear to see that all the supermarkets can't keep up with trying to sell everything under one roof.

There isn't really another option than Tesco for me and I'm pretty happy with it

Sainsbury is too much
I'm not a fan of asda
Butchers etc involves trek into town, paying for parking

A simple click and collect at Tesco is a wonderful thing
I hate going in store, takes up over an hour of time

If it's not cash related then the markets don't usually react. This is reflected by just a 2% drop with a write off close to 1/3 of Tesco's market cap.

I buy chicken breasts from my local butcher in 5kg packs for £21 and the quality of the meat is superior. I was forced to use some supermarket chicken on Sunday as the butcher was closed and I am never doing it again! I forgot just how tough the supermarket chicken is...

I am spoilt for choice when it comes to supermarket, I have all the major ones within 5 min drive, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, ASDA, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, M&S.

I would only go to Tesco if I know they have a sale on something that I can't get else where, like my Xbox One deal last October. I haven't been back since or 12 months prior.

Just back from the local lidl, figured I would check it again since theres gotta be some reason everyone keeps saying its cheaper... I found very few things were cheaper than tesco, most of it is the same. Not to knock lidl thats quite an accomplishment in itself but the same isnt cheaper.

Largely the same price:
Natural low fat yoghurt - Tesco 45p per 500g, Lidl 45p per 500g
Cottage cheese - Tesco is 64p for 300g, Lidl 45p for 200g very similar
Wholemeal bread - same, 40p for 800g
Tuna - more expensive they have nothing to beat tesco value tuna at 160g for 75p
Oats - Tesco 75p for 1kg, Lidl 500g for 40p, similar

These were a bit cheaper:
Frozen veg - Tescos £1 for 1kg, Lidl 89p for 1kg
Almonds - Tesco £2.70, Lidl £1.70
(if tesco stocks the big bag of aasani almonds tesco will be cheaper, not all stores stock this though)

Fruit is a bit of a crapshoot and varies throughout the year, I find tesco are more expensive for fruit but lidls dosent last as long. Anecdotal though I suppose, ill give fruit to lidl as they seem more consistent with the prices.

So overall what the hell are people buying to see these big savings??? Its mostly the same prices between the stores. Is it just the kind of person that buys bernard mathhews turkey herp a derps and only eats kelloggs krave cereal that feels tesco is a ripoff or what? Maybe its just the stuff I buy thats the same price...

This is always the impression I've got. Lidl and Aldi don't necessarily stock these things and have their own alternatives, so people are forced to buy something different when there. Amazingly, it then comes out cheaper. Shock horror! When shopping in one of the big 4, if people dropped their brands and bought alternatives, the price would be much more similar.

And trading profit down 60%, with customers deserting them for Aldi/Lidl on one side, then Waitrose on the other.... with the added margin compression given the competition on price the German ones bring.

Yep, profits are down but they are still in profit. Making ~1Bn this year instead of 3Bn and having to write down 7Bn in assets is a heck of a lot better than making a 6.4Bn loss. It's not great for them but not as bad as it first appears.
