Basically I want to know if I will pay tax on an expensive item ordered from Germany

I'm aware of both VAT and import duty which I have had to pay from USA to UK

I get the impression that this isn't the case within the EU trade group?

VAT only as far as I am aware within the EU. VAT rates from country of supplier.

This changed afaik from Jan 1st

Businesses now selling to individuals have to charge the VAT rate of the individuals country, not the country of supply.

Has made it a bit of a pita for the business as you now have to have a variety of VAT rates set up and account for.

Edit :

Apologies, this is just for electronic (digital) services. As one of my friends runs a website business, I was aware of the change affecting him.

OK. No customs.

Vat seems more complex but as I see it the cost of the item is near enough the cost I will pay (only 1pc difference in Vat price)

It's an eBay item too so I am probably going to have no problems

Whatever you pay at the point of sale is all you'll pay on EU goods AFAIK as the VAT will have already been paid and there's no import duty.

Seems to be the case. Great time to buy with the EUR being so weak
