An east London mayor has been removed from office and a poll declared void after he was found guilty of electoral fraud.
An Election Commissioner concluded Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman breached election rules and must vacate his post immediately.
Four voters alleged he used "corrupt and illegal practices" in last year's election, which must now be re-run.
Mr Rahman, who denied any wrong-doing, has been banned from standing again.
At the special High Court hearing, Election Commissioner Richard Mawrey also ordered Mr Rahman to pay £250,000 in costs.
One of Mr Rahman's aides Alibor Choudhury was also found guilty of corrupt and illegal practices.

Pretty shocking that this sort of thing can go on in modern Britain. At least we got there in the end though, let's home for a free and fair re-election without Mr Rahman though I wonder why he is not in prison.

Excellent news - I hope this is the first of many. Rumours are rife of similar goings on in Labour councils elsewhere.

Oh how the lefties cried foul at the time of the accusations.

You do realise Rahman is not a Labour councillor? In fact, it was Labour activists who complained about him in the first place.

He was labour until 2010, then he was deselected after initially being selected by the labour party...

And deselected with good reason.

Tower Hamlets is in a terrible state because of him. He's been running down their reserve at a frightening rate.

I was under the impression he was deselected due to a rival making unsubstantiated claims he had links to extremist groups.

Regardless glad it's finally been sorted. Hopefully they can move on without too much issue.

Wonder what job he'll go to now.

Indeed, but as he was elected in 2002 I do wonder how long the corruption was going on before it moved from the usual local council party biased corruption to feathering his own nest...

If he doesn't end up sewing sacks in Dartmoor, he'll probably end up working for some human rights charity.

The corruption starts in the mosques and radiates out...

am i right ?

Controversial

If you want to be controversial surely you say something along the lines of, it starts with allah, gets beamed down to mecca, from this is radiates out and is spread around the world to those who turn to face the centre of prayer, and imbibes them with corruption.

It is all twaddle, there are plenty of crooked politicans from all religions, and non-religions in every corner of the world. Politics and corruption go hand in hand.
