I was looking into upgrading my PS4 HDD. I have found cheap 2.5" 1TB And also 1TB SSHD but thought it was a bit of waste as I already have a few drives I can use.

Now does anyone know if the SATA power connector internally for the drive output enough juice to power a 3.5" Drive? The reason I ask is that I have seen a lot of SATA Extenders that combine the power and the SATA cable. (Like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455333147&pf_rd_i=468294) and I could just use one of those routed to the outside of the case and the HDD sitting on top. Yes I know its a bit ghetto but it would save me about £50 and I rarely move the console so shouldn't be a problem.

If it does not power the 3.5" drive I could just use an external SATA enclosure (Think I have one somewhere) To power the drive and then connect the SATA extension cable to the console. I was just looking for a way to save another plug.

2TB passport drive is £65 and wouldn't mean leaving the console exposed to dust, etc.

Or buy that thing that makes the console bigger allowing you to put a 3.5" drive into it directly

Just stick to a normal 5400 rpm drive somewhere in back of my mind I recall reading it's best not to use above this because the power draw can overload overheat put stress on the psu.

And a ps4 will end up breaking a solid state they are not designed to be contsantly written to as the ps4 OS does.

But you wouldn't need any special leads ? just a sata lead and a sata to sata power cable ?

using a faster drive doesn't really improve loading times much either, more important just to have your most played games installed first so they are on the edge of the platter

If you really want a solid state in there best to get a hybrid drive

Does this make much of a difference?

unless the stock drive is full it's pointless upgrading atm IMO. now the backup feature has arrived you don't need to re-install everything from scratch.

the best drives are either large mechanical 2TB or 500GB hybrid.

i personally upgraded my stock drive on launch to a 500GB hybrid, people say it doesn't make any difference but I load into games a lot faster than my mate (we play online on party chat) who is using the stock drive.

i think in destiny i loaded a good 4-6 seconds faster into the tower and the same for GTA V, was the same for BF4.

i sold the stock drive for a little less than what i paid for the hybrid, so it was only like a £10-£15 upgrade which was worth it IMO.

the more you store on a hybrid the slower it becomes which is why i opted for a 500GB.

so at this moment in time get a 500GB hybrid or a 2tb mechanical is the best bet depending on how much storage you need. the larger hybrids IMO are pointless.

Just put a 2TB Seagate drive in mine for £69.99 now hammering the downloads of digital games, some have said it loads a little quicker than stock, will see tomorrow once I've re installed every thing, it's nice and easy to do though.

One way to get a cheaper 2tb 2.5" drive is to buy a drive in an enclosure - for some strange reason this is cheaper than buying the bare drive - as a bonus you can then re-use your spare 500gb PS4 drive as a USB storage device.

Yeah thats what I've done with the Seagate 2tb. Should be with me Monday. Eurogamer ran a few tests with it and it does shave off a few seconds loading on most games as well.

manufacturers have cottoned onto this and now a lot of enclosures come with the adapter soldered on or aren't made with a sata connector.

you have to make sure the drive your buying hasn't been doctored in any way.

That what I did..

This is the 2.5" 2TB harddrive I used to upgrade my PS4 ;)

Surely tho if you rip out a drive from its enclosure it voids the warranty and obviously just using the bare drive wouldn't? My stock 500gb is full and I have deleted some stuff. I think I will just go for a 2tb and be done with it!

Same drive as i've just put in, and yes it will void it,but for the cost it's worth it, and how often do HHD's go wrong !! not very.

After in the install of the OS i have around 1.7TB of free space to use

All you people buying Seagate drives I would avoid.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive/

They have the biggest failure rate and it's by quite a large margin. Only their 4TB drives are any good according to this research carried out by a data centre using about 30,000+ drives.

Toshiba or western digital all the way, there is a reason why seagate is so cheap.

I have used seagate drives at work for about 15 years. Probably supplied a few thousand and our fault rate is the lowest of all the drives on the market.
