earthquake in Nepal

Seems pretty bad. My mate is living in Delhi at the moment and said his house was shaking quite a lot even that far away.
 
Oh damn, that's tragic. Seems like a pretty hefty one too. A mate of mine is from one of the villages local to the main quake, I'd best get in touch.

Terrible news. I find the fact we are only offering to send 8 people to help an absolute disgrace.

The US is sending a disaster response team and has released an initial $1m (£0.7m) according to the US aid agency USAid

India has sent several aircraft, carrying medical supplies and a mobile hospital, as well as a 40-strong disaster response team, including rescuers with dogs

The UK is sending an eight-strong team of humanitarian experts

Pakistan is sending four C-130 aircraft carrying a 30-bed field hospital and army doctors and specialists; urban search-and-rescue teams equipped with radars and sniffer dogs; and food items, including 2,000 meals, 200 tents and 600 blankets

Norway has promised 30 million krone (£2.5m; $3.9m) in humanitarian assistance

Germany, Spain, France, Israel and the European Union are also pledging to send aid

Terrible news. The death toll has already doubled since yesterday evening:

Rescue efforts in Nepal are intensifying after nearly 2,000 people were killed in the country's worst earthquake in more than 80 years.

Many countries and international charities have offered aid to Nepal to deal with the disaster.

Seventeen people have been killed on Mount Everest by avalanches - the mountain's worst-ever disaster.

The death toll could rise, as the situation is unclear in remote areas which remain cut off or hard to access.

Many mountain roads are cracked or blocked by landslides.

Yup, I'm sure the 8 the US are sending will be experts in coordinating search and rescue operations, rather than 8 pairs of hands to rummage through the rubble.
 
It's horrible :(

That must have been absolutely chaotic, especially in some of the build up densily populated area's, and no doubt weak buildings.
 
Up to 2200 now. I knew when they said 160 and showed some flat building that was unlikely. It could be 10 times thst or even worse. Not much can be done but dig the people out and without heavy equipment just a race against time.
 
Its terrible, but not all towards oblivious to the fact that living near faults, volcanoes and turbulent weather systems reduces the average life quality.

Technology could easily deal with most of these issues in time.

After returning from Nepal with my wife after visiting her family and her sister's new house quite many years ago I mentioned to her an article that indicated that many of the houses built in Kathmandu are done so without a proper architect and earthquake protection to save costs. I told her that considering the location of the city that it was a disaster waiting to happen. It is very sad that this day had to come. I must say my wife's family and friends are all ok and she has made contact with them.
