New GFX Card advice - 290x or 970?

I got a free GTX 970 from a family member, and swapped it into my system yesterday - it certainly runs GTA V better than my R9 290 did (overclocked to 1050mhz core).

Also played all my other games very nicely. Only annoyance was a bit of coil whine, depends how sensitive your are to it.

What ever people say, the 970 is the premium card out of the 290x and the 970.

Lately all the AAA titles are Game Works, and the Nvidia cards have access to all the goodies and most of the time perform better. (Future titles to bear in mind, Witcher 3 and Bat Man AK both game works)

Also, if the OP is upgrading with GTAV in mind, the 970 is faster than the 290x in this title.

HOWEVER, the OP needs to be realistic. My current rig is a 970 and a [email protected]. I am playing with only 2x MSAA at 1200p and mostly very high settings in GTAV.

You will NOT be playing with 4xMSAA in GTAV. It is possible to play the game with 2x MSAA and MFAA active (which is basally 4x MSAA), but I opted for a bit more performance.

You might actually be better off waiting…

However if your looking for value, the current 290x on offer is good.

Also take into consideration whether you will go for a gsync or freesync monitor in the future

Gsync have a much wider range range of operation, freesync monitors drop out of freesync when they are out of their range.

This should read current Gsync monitors have a wider range of operation. Freesync as far as i am aware can work all the way down 9hz if the monitor supports it.

According to this article.

Another difference between FreeSync and G-Sync is in the flexibility of the effective refresh rate range. G-Sync is capable of refresh rates that range from 30Hz to 144Hz while the FreeSync spec is capable of refresh rates that range from 9Hz to 240Hz. That doesn’t mean that you will find monitors with a refresh rate range of 9Hz-240Hz but it means that monitor makers can make monitors with any range in mind that falls between 9Hz-240Hz. FreeSync monitors out right now feature a variety of ranges.

Well if you are going to use the word 'current' for Gsync then surely the same should apply to the 'current Freesync monitors, so what Stulid said is quite accurate.:)

If it was me I'd get a 970.
Not quite the same but I went from two 970's to two 8Gb 290x's and instantly regretted it.
So much so that I sold the two 290x's within 2 weeks and bought a 980.

The heat from the 290x's was horrific and they were constantly throttling.

And straight under that quote they have a list of monitors all with no better than 40 hz minimum limits, That alone is laughable when you consider the current cards that run free-sync, For starters you'll be lucky to reach the minimum limit with the 260 and 260x so what was the point on making those freesync capable, I suppose old games will be okay, whoopee. The only chance I'll have of staying above the minimum is if the 390x is a beast, I like the eye candy and the 290x is often under that at 1080p so at 1440p my only hope will be the 390x.

I suppose your one of those reformed guys that now shoots for a solid 30fps these days. It's laughable as even with g-sync and freesync most people will still be shooting for a nice solid 60 or above depending on refresh rate. Granted 30fps G-Sync will be better than 30fps without it but 60fps G-Sync/Freesync will still be better.

The fact is its up to the monitor manufacturers what they want to produce but the tech is supposedly capable of 9hz on the low end.
