Hi,

From June I'm going to be without a car until September so need to lease/hire a car for 3-4 months - What are my options?
I have a budget of £400 pcm - is this enough to hire a Focus size car?

I could buy a cheapish car to run short term but I do not want the hassle of selling it at the end.

Thanks :)

£400 pcm gets you a nice car during a traditional 24 month lease but not sure how it works with such a short period.

I have a feeling it's not quite in the class of car you are looking for, but how about a £5/6k Focus? You'll have no problem selling that at the end, it's likely to be reliable and cheap to run and the depreciation will be minimal.

Buy a Honda Accord or similar with a budget of £1500 with an aim to resell at £995 in 4 months time.

In all likelyhood you'll be able to run it for zero running costs and the £995 pricepoint will likely be less than its worth so it'll sell within a few days with no hassle at all.

Sold my sisters old Mazda3 a few years back at £995 when in reality I could have held out for £1300ish and the phone rang constantly all evening and somebody collected it the next day. Absolutely zero hassle.

Renting cars for this period of time is going to get very expensive very fast sadly.

With it being a Golf R thats on order you might be a tad optimistic with your lead time, too.....

Buy a banger and sell it cheap when your new car is ready. You won't be hit with a huge loss that way

Exactly! You can spend more than you suggested as long as you pick the right car. Focus, Mondeo, Mini etc

+1 for the honda accord as a cheap reliable car. I have been trying to kill my 02 plate one for 5 years and it just keeps refusing to die. As long as you pay reasonably little for the car and sell for under the normal price to get rid of it quick it will work out cheaper than hiring (unless you buy a lemon)

Or get VW to give you a courtesy car whilst you are waiting for the Golf?

I've heard some stories of people getting a car until their new one arrives...not sure if it is a common thing though. :o

It's not unusual for dealers to provide loan cars while people wait for new ones to be delivered

IF the new one is significantly delayed

This. If the car is delayed or the dealer messes up you might get a few weeks of car hire or be able to negotiate something.

I don't think any dealer would just give out a loan car for 4 months as the buyers old car is going back early.
