Cracking day out Murf , quite envious of that cycling country

You've got pan flat rides to the north up the coast, Kielder Forest to the north west and the north pennines to the south west. Really, really, spoilt for choice up here. My preference is definitely the flat ride up the coast!

Great ride and the pics look fantastic, looks like you chose a great day for it!

Was -1 degrees at 5.20am when I set off but soon warmed up and was great most of the day. Got caught a few times in hailstorms near the end though!

I quite klike the looks of that ROSE bike, not been a huge fan on their looks in the past. But yes, weird seat stays.

What is with the trend of plastering technology buzz words all over the frame?

"T30/40 Carbon Fibre HOC Technology"

Like I need reminding that the carbon bike I bought has a carbon frame.

Not a fan of those seat-stays, they look crooked :/

Part of the advantage of disc brakes (or putting the brakes under the bottom bracket as they do on a few other models) is that it allows the seatstays to be more flexible which should give it a better ride.

It is hard to ignore Rose bikes for their value though. <£800 for their entry level 105 bike with Mavic Aksiums, and all of their alu bikes seem incredibly light. Pretty much undercut Canyon a lot of the time.

I have a set of Shimano R500's on my Dolan (currently my only bike that's actually a bike), commuter / all round bike.

I've got all the bits I need to build up my previously cracked and repaired Raleigh frame and also my newly purchased Giant Propel frame.

I have a set of PX 50mm wheels which I'll use but want another set for general riding, fast rides, taking to the Lakes etc.

Had a fun ride back to work at lunch with a van driver who I am sure literally had no idea of what was going on around them on the road. I'm in primary on the left lane going the same speed as the traffic on a two lane road. Some car ahead stops to turn right, van driver just veers into my lane and almost hits me. Briefly we both got stopped by a set of lights ahead so obviously I shout a lot at the driver but no response at all. Normally I'd assume they were ignoring me on purpose but this guy looked really really stupid and completely in a world of his own.

Pretty awesome. Just needs mudguard mounts to be perfect.

Ok talk to me about chains! :D

My Giant Defy 1 2015 came with a 'KMC X11L' which is showing as pretty much 0.75 worn, or will be before doing 800 miles. It probably could have been kept cleaner through the winter as it has been quite a mucky one (lots of dust and mud, not much rain).

grudas mentioned doing loads more miles on an SRAM chain (I think?), is it as 'simple' as looking for one 11 speed compatible or do I need to look for Shimano specific?

KMC X11 EL out of stock and £27 on Wiggle. None of the SRAM 11 speed chains on Wiggle list as compatible with Shimano?

How many links do I need (without having to count the damn things!)? ;)

Will also be changing my jockey wheels as I'm convinced one of them could spin easier, any recommendations? Will any kind of bearing wheel be compatible?

If the speed of the chain matches you can pretty much assume it will be compatible.

I've tried nearly all the chain types you can buy and they're all much of a muchness. Lots of people have brand loyalty or different experiences though. I usually go for whatever is cheapest on CRC or Wiggle - which is often Shimano.

Most times there are two options for amount of links and both will be too many links for your bike so just buy whichever is cheapest and then use the Sheldon Brown technique for working out the correct length when you install the new chain on your bike.

edit: Can't comment on jockey wheels I'm afraid.

KMC make Shimano chains, so a HG73 chain, say, is the same as a KMC X.73 chain. Pick whichever is cheaper. KMC do various variants - L is light, EL is extra light, SL is super light, I forget which is the lightest, but I do recall that the difference is piddly so probably not worth worrying about. They do chains with "ecoteq" coating which are supposed to be more rust resistant, which might be a good idea if you've managed to kill one within 800 miles!

I see Happy Chap on the Strava club has posted another lol-tastic ride 42 miles @ 26.9 mph :p

I might have to do a turbo ride where I don't hook up any resistance to see if I can beat him.

I quite like logging my turbo training on Strava but to be honest with my set up it's actually slower speeds than the equivalent effort on the road.

It doesn't massively bother me to see things like dodgy speeds from spin classes or uncorrected climbing data but the first few times I saw such things and didn't realise the reason behind it I was pretty shocked at how ridiculous the rides looked (in my defence, I don't think the speeds were ever *quite* as high as nearly 27mph over 40-odd miles before).

Spin classes are a good workout as long as you put the effort in but why post them on Strava?

The classes I went to (& this was a long time ago now) the bikes didn't have speed or distance on them, do they now?
