What's your definition of sport then MrMoonX? I think bridge could be categorised as a "brain sport". It certainly takes effort, skill and mental effort to be good at the game. Anyway, if we assume that the brain is a muscle then it stands to reason that it is getting a work out whilst someone plays bridge.

What is your view of darts, golf and lawn bowls for example?

A sport should involve some form of physical activity! Darts and bowls not a sport imo. Golf is a sport as you actually ache afterwards.

The brain is certainly not a muscle! Lol

You see no value in intellectual competition ?

You say the brain is not a muscle but it is extremely like one in particular it can be trained and the more you use it the stronger it becomes.

For me to play a sport you have to be described as "sporty", so that's darts and snooker off the table.

I know what the dictionary says, but by that definition sport is playing your mates at FIFA and so is 'Soggy Biscuit'

Don't get me started on "E-sports" what a load of **** no wonder kids are so fat

'mind sports' are beneficial to people

there are health benefits to them too, especially for people in old age

Call them something else then but it's not sport! If people think sitting playing cards is a sport then they feel they have done something sporty when they have done sweet naff all. Look at darts! If ever there was a shining example of a non sport filled with obesity it's darts

Indeed, chess is defined as sport and Bridge is every bit as challenging, if not more so.

Plus Bridge is an amazingly fun game that deserve much higher recognition.

Chess isn't a sport either though, and the issue here is that for some reason people get it in their heads that something has to be classified as a sport because it lends out validity, and if you deny that out is a sport then you are trying to discredit it some how.

Chess isn't a sport, Bridge isn't, video games aren't sports, but they still are what they are regardless of whether some official body says they are or not.

could say that about some mental 'illnesses', I mean some of them are diagnosed only by their behavioral symptoms and don't have any real physical symptoms that can be tested/detected... maybe they should be called something else since they're not 'real' illnesses
