I've never owned a vehicle for more than a year before, and coming up to one year mark. But a little hesitant about a few things, so I thought I'd post here, and see if anyone can help me out.

When I bought the vehicle, I bought a years tax. Will be a year in two days. I received a letter saying I need to either tax via post office or online, or declare sorn.
"Your vehicle tax runs out on 30th Apr"
Question: How long will I have to do this? Should I renew on the 1st? And will I be fined if I leave too long?

Also, insurance expires on the 7th, in 9 days.
Question: Same again, how long do I have to find a new policy? Will I be fined if I'm not quick? And do I need to declare sorn, even if the vehicle is on a driveway when insurance expires.

Any help would be much appreciated. I also ask because an opportunity to grab a new vehicle has come, and not sure if I want to sell or keep current vehicle. Thank you!

Don't know a definite answer to your questions but you can pretty much insure/tax a vehicle anytime before it runs out. So you can leave it till last minute and if you're looking for a new car at the moment you can always insure and tax it and when it comes to selling you automatically get a refund for your tax and you can claim for a refund on insurance.

Your insurance expires when it expires (on your cover note it'll say the time as it's either midnight on that night or 00:01 on that day as such). You've got 9 days to get it insured with a start date on that day.

Just to be clear that once your insurance runs out you can't drive the car or leave it on a public road.

Some insurance companies automatically renew if you don't take action so you might want to check that if you arnt planning to use the car again.

Damn. I just checked. My Tax runs out on the 1st of may. And there is NO way i can get to the Post office before saturday.

Can you set it up online with JUST the V5?

Yes, there's no need to go anywhere near a Post Office anymore now you can do it online or over the phone in a couple of minutes.

You can do it online, can either pay for 6 months, 12 months or monthly DD.

12 months is the cheapest, but monthly DD may be a handy way of doing it.
