I would love if someone could sanity check this to make sure i'm not missing something obvious here.

Here is a screenshot of what i'm looking at.

http://gyazo.com/ba7bb924353a7c6267af91e76e700f64

Now the two windows on the bottom left, (from left to right) is the properties of the C drive. (from My computer, click the C drive, and click properties.)

Next to that is the properties of ALL the files on said C drive, even hidden folders. (from going into the C drive, highlighting everything, right click > properties)

The discrepancy here is that the left window says ive used 164GB of my 232GB total, leaving me with 68GB left.
Whereas the total for all the files and folders on the C drive only comes to 132GB; so i should have 100GB left.

The disk is not partitioned, there is nothing in the recycle bin, no temp files etc. Its been recently defragmented; but i cannot for love nor money find where this mysterious 32GB has gone!

There is 232GB of usage, and the total for the files on the C drive only makes up 132GB in total. Surely i should have 100GB free space?

Am i overlooking something? Is anyone able to think of anything i'm missing!:confused:

Open the start menu, right click Computer and click Properties. Now on the left side menu, select Advanced system settings. Go to the System Protection tab, select the C drive and select Configure. Click delete and this will remove all the system restore points. Now check, has that given your space back?

At a guess you have 16 GB RAM, and have both a page file and a hibernation file.

BTW That looks to be a SSD so you should turn off defragmentation.

Heres my hibernation / page file with 36GB's of real memory so as Brendy and Quartz say thats probably what it is as they are hidden system files.

I would ignore all the advice above, they don't know what they're talking about :p

Take the HDD out of the computer and take the top off the drive, you'll find it in there.
Once found, reverse the process and enjoy.

I'm glad I could be of service :D

I think your link should be changed to MarkSarksPhotography.co.uk ;-)

There could also be a load of windows update files lurking in c:\windows\software distribution. These can be deleted without issue. Also make sure you delete restore points and shadow copies. These can be done through the disk cleanup.

I'm not sure why all the advice about deleting restore points. If I've got the free space, I'd rather have them. System restores have saved my bacon a good few times.

I think the advice to delete them is just to help identify whether they are the cause of the 'missing' space or not.

If you delete them and your 'Used Space' changes to 132GB and the 'Free Space' goes to 100Gb, but the Properties for 'All Files in c:\' stays at 132GB, then you know that the Properties for 'All Files in c:\' just wasn't counting the space used for Restore Points.

Whether you want to delete them to find this out or not, is up to you :)
