Regardless of your practical response (some use it positively, many negatively), the advert does make you feel inferior (hence giving you a negative body image). And that's what people are unhappy with.

But doesn't most advertising do that, see a nice car/watch/holiday etc advert and fell inferior that you can't afford them. Im guessing you are against those as well then?
 
I thought that Monroe was a size 14-16 or something along those lines so overweight women always quote that they are actually the image of desirability. I also thought that sizes were different at the time and that her size actually equates to about an 8-10 nowadays.

well yes, most adverts are aspirational

and frankly it is probably a good thing that people with lots of excess fat don't have a positive body image, I'm not sure that the whole fat acceptance movement is necessarily a good thing.
 
After all these years, mystery and conspiracy theories still surround her death, but when it comes to her physical attributes, I can put a few facts straight. Contrary to received wisdom, she was not a voluptuous size 16 – quite the opposite. While she was undeniably voluptuous – in possession of an ample bosom and a bottom that would look at home gyrating in a J-Lo video – for most of the early part of her career, she was a size 8 and even in her plumper stages, was no more than a 10. I can tell you this from experience because a few weeks ago, I tried to try on her clothes.

she's certainly not a modern size 14-16 and any women who are that size and are claiming to have her figure are just deluding themselves
 
I eat a lot, and I mean a lot, and I am still only 11st. And its not like I do any exercise. I consider myself very unfit as I get knackered during a 30 min kick about on a five a side pitch. I can't think that I do that much physical exercise at all actually. Where as the mrs, well she eats less than me, walks the dog more, doesn't really drink booze (unlike me!), and is chasing around after our 14mth year old, yet she can't shift the weight that she wants to.

Someone explain me that!?

a) Men burn more calories than women.
b) Metabolism plays a part
c) Walking the dog and and being a mother doesn't constitute anything like proper exercise.
d) She probably eats more crap than you and snacks more than you
e) Some people put on and retain fat more than others.

Its pretty obvious that the subject of weight loss is not a simple subject where everyone is identical. The fact of that matter though is that if you want to lose weight and do what you should, you will lose weight.

My missus loves watching programs about massive fatties losing loads of weight (people who are borderline bedbound usually) and the thing that annoys me most is probably how pleased they are with themselves after getting surgery and losing loads of weight. Apparently they have worked so hard and earned it. Surprise surprise you can magically lose loads of weight when you can't physically stuff your face all day.
 
I'm not where I want to be and I doubt I ever will. I want to get stronger, and fitter, but it's an asymptote the closer you get to your goal the further it continues to get - or impossible.

If I wanted it enough I'd work harder at it. I don't so I do what I can. That said I'm in pretty good shape and stronger than 90% of the population which is my goal, strength - but could I look better? Of course, but that's less important to me.

I see strong people and aspire to be like them and train harder as a result. I don't beat myself up when I struggle or get injured, I reevaluate, recover and return to it.

There's not such thing as "perfect" anyway - just "better". If I'm not getting better at something, I either try harder, or learn to do it better or improve the areas that I can get better at. It is about having the right attitude. I compete against myself I don't really give a care about other's strength or performance as long as they are honest and true to themselves.
 
Although quite harsh, I think it would be interesting for someone to turn up at the protest in Hyde Park with a BMI machine and dare all of them to get tested. I can see them walking in shouting "I'm normal!" then walking out rather miffed when they're told they're obese.
 
Most likely you eat less than you think and she east more than she thinks.

People often over/under estimate the amount of calories they eat.
lol, no. I see the size of my dinner compared to hers and its like twice the size. Unless she is sneaking a kabab at lunch or something, which I doubt very much, I don't believe that this is the case.

First off course men need to eat more then men. Should go without saying. However dinner is only one meal. What else does she eat the rest of the day?

If she can't shift the weight she is eating too much. It's pretty simple. Also if you eat a lot like you claim you would weigh more then 11 stone which is pretty light (assuming you're not very short). Especially as you're not active.

I still think it's likely you both have the wrong idea about how much you eat.

great doesn't mean at any point that someone larger isn't:-

1. Healthy
2. Fit
3. Attractive
4. Allowed to wear beach clothing.

But the advert doesn't mean that either. The "get beach body ready" is a phrase lifted straight out of women's magazines, usually relating to images and articles about slim women and losing weight to get on the beach.

Unfortunately they are a bit stuck if they show any body now, showing one larger would mean they are either glorifying being overweight and showing someone of real healthy build is considered fat shaming...

That's the "negative body image" the advert is promoting. Negative self-image, NOT a negative image of a beautiful, fit woman in the illustration. That's what everyone is misunderstanding.

So how would you suggest they advertise their product? A product they aim at people that want to be fit and healthy?

US dress sizes are about 4 smaller than the UK, so she was a size 14-16 (US), which is ~10-12 in the UK. Much like the US size 0 is a size 4 in the UK.

The comprising is a prime example of excuses for being overweight. Unless you're a 6 ft+ woman or special in some way (such as a rugby player) the reality is you're overweight if you're a size 14 or 16 and could probably do with losing some weight, although to be fair a couple of sizes overweight probably isn't a major issue if you also exercise and live a healthy lifestyle.
