I know. Not the typical Motors type of vehicle, but please indulge me :)

Has anyone got one? Or hired one? I have been thinking about trying one out for a while, so we're going to hire one for a long weekend and pop down to Devon/Cornwall with the children.

The only thing that slightly concerns me is storage space. I really don't want to have to take a trailer and from photographs and video I have found it doesn't seem like there's a lot of space behind the rear passenger seats.

Any user experiences or tips/tricks to get the most out of it?

Hire a Passat and drive it to a Premier Inn near Newquay instead. Better to drive, more economical, more comfortable and better quality overnight accommodation.

And loads cheaper.

That works without children but with children - uh uh.

We used to holiday several times per year as children, often in hotels  Get one with connecting rooms, parents in one, children in the next. That's how my parents always did it anyway.

There is more space in a Premier Inn family room than there is in a VW California

I often see children staying in Premier Inn's. I wish I didn't (:D) but sadly I do :D

It was tongue in cheek anyway so we shouldnt drag George's thread too far off topic :p

I've looked into this before a bit, the biggest problem you will have is that the vast majority of the ones for rent are conversions so they are all a little bit different.
The only way to know is to try one out, there is space for luggage but obviously it needs shuffled around when you are setting up for snoozing depending on how much stuff you have - best approach is to think of it like camping (i.e. take minimal stuff, only what's necessary) an then you can fit non essentials in if there's room!

The company I looked at yesterday uses factory VW Californias, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

The minimal packing is great advice. If only my wife wouldn't pack everything we own and the kitchen sink!
