I can't think of any reason why not. How old are 9 speed 105s, though? It may be that by the time tiagra got to 9 speed it was just the same as 9 speed 105 anyway. But by all means go for it if you've got a decent source for the 105 kit!

You are right m8, I've just had a look for 105 9 speed kit and its even rarer than Tiagra! Scratch that idea - a used 4500 lever it will need to be. :)

TLDR; I've done my spokes too tight and buckled my wheel, how do I sort?

Fixed it! Will do a full writeup but feel I could now probably build a wheel from scratch...!

Take it to the bike shop!!

Noooo never! (see write-up above) :D

Got myself a little cheap camera (SJ4000) to mount on the bike. Usually the mount is for under the bars, but I wanted the view to show the brake levers in screen - just need my out front garmin mount to arrive for the other side, as had to move it from the stem. Not bad for £40!

Looks good, you enjoy it! I have my VIRB on top of the bars and it annoyed me after a while as it sticks up so much - that looks like it sticks up even more! Will it not get in the way when climbing out of the saddle?

Watch the mounts. I watched the club go pro bounce down the road on one ride.

My VIRB has bounced a number of times, only twice on the open road and thankfully both times it headed towards the curb! Still going strong and the slight dink in the lens doesn't show on the recordings so all good :D

Yeah it's pretty snuggly fit, might put some Loctite or something similar just to make sure though. Didn't notice any issue while out of the seat, it doesn't sit out any further than the stem and not too high for me anyway. Soon find out..!

Right, someone on a bike forum I'm a member on has just said that since its the left shifter which controls the front mech it shouldn't matter whether the shifter comes from a 9 or a 10 speed groupset as its only moving the front mech onto the big or small ring?

Does that sound right? Because if it is then that opens up a few more options for me.

Also, just changing the cassette and the chain would allow me to run 10 speed shifters, yeah?

I think (as Von mentioned) that it'll only matter if it's a single or a triple. I don't recall differing groupsets having more distance between front chainrings, it wouldn't make sense to?

I'd at least try and match colour/style to your existing one, if you could get a Shimano shifter a similar age you may avoid some unforeseen problem...

Jonny or similar may know more...

From Sheldonbrown:
7-speed, 8-speed, 9-speed, 10-speed...

Many front derailers are designated for some number of speeds in back. This is actually primarily a marketing distinction, not a functional one. Pretty much any front derailer will work with any modern chain system.

It is true that the cages have gotten slightly narrower to match the narrower chains used on systems with more rear sprockets, but this is rarely a problem in practice.

Yes, which I was wondering earlier. The left shifter doesn't have any fancy indexing, so it should work.

Yes, your rear mech wouldn't need to be changed as it is still moving over the same width of cassette, and the front mech and chainset are pretty much speed agnostic.

Anyone used this website?

https://en.komoot.de/

Seems pretty good at plotting way points for various types of rides and has a fairly complete list of landmarks, some really obscure ones near my house that I didn't know about.

App works with Android Wear if anyone uses that (I do), perfect app for use with the sony smartwatch which has GPS.

139 miles to Cheltenham done. I'd forgotten what it's like to ride with a backpack - my lower back was quite painful by the end. Not feeling too bad today and the average speed wasn't too bad given the length of the route. I could probably have gone a tiny bit faster without feeling like death too I reckon.

Um anyone got the Vectors? They seem review well but would be interested in personal opinions.

Presumably thats similar to stages, but you don't get the R/L balance type information?

I guess at my level I don't need the Garmin Cycling Dynamics at first anyway, and would just benefit from starting out with the power based training, and then upgrade to R/L at a later stage if I really want too. Bargain I think!

Failed a bit today on my attempt at the Cambridge 100 sportive.

It had started to rain before I left the house this morning, with the forecast set for more rain throughout the morning. Within 11 miles my Garmin decided it had had enough of life, lost GPS signal, turned itself off shortly after, and has refused to work at all again since. A bit further down the road one of my contact lenses came out and split in half, leaving me half blind. Then at the 50/100 mile route split I got a puncture so I had the joys of changing tubes in the pouring rain. Was a real shame because I was with a good group and we were making decent progress.

At that point I decided to just go for the 50 miler, couldn't really afford to lose the other contact lense and was down to one inner tube with more punctures seemingly inevitable (excuses, excuses, I know :p).

Next time I think I'll be taking my glasses in my jersey pocket, or at least a spare pair of contacts. Now time to shop for a new Garmin... :(

I'm looking at the Vector S and the Stages at the moment as my Powertap is broken and I suspect it needs a new torque tube, which is £350ish.

I like the idea of the Stages, but my groupset on the Cervelo is 5700 105 and that either ties me to that group or I'll have mismatched crank arms when I next upgrade (next upgrade would be Di2).

Vector strikes me as a better option as its easy to switch between frames and of you want to upgrade to both sides later then you can. However, whilst I know the pods are cheap to replace I've not looked into the pedals themselves; I usually end up replacing a pair of pedals every 2 years as the fronts become worn. Also, given the development cycles involved in these things what are the chances that by the time I want to upgrade to both sides and can afford it they will still be making the upgrade for my version?

I guess I should send my powertap off to Paligap for an assessment first.

Legs aren't as bad as I expected today but sleeping really badly on a friend's couch when you really need some proper rest hasn't made me feel amazing. On a train back to Manchester now and I'm really dreading the three mile ride back from Stockport :p
