Security guard injured in Texas Muhammed cartoon conference

Surprised there hasn't been a thread about this already. Hasn't been confirmed that the gunmen were jihadabads, but on the face of it this would seem like a result for the good guys. The security guard's injuries aren't thought to be life threatening.

Two gunmen have been shot dead after they opened fire outside a conference on cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a suburb of Dallas, US police say.
A security guard was also injured. Police sealed off the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland and evacuated participants.
The gunmen's car is being searched for a possible bomb, police added.
The event, organised by a group critical of Islam, included a contest for drawings of the Prophet.
Dutch anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders was among those attending. He tweeted that shots had been fired and he had safely left the building.

That is true and, for that, I am very glad. But as with everything in life, not being as bad as the other guy doesn't stop you from being a ****head on your own merits.

The art being displayed at the conference. Though I don't really agree with offending people's religions, if the reaction to that offence is violence then they've brought it on themselves.

Genuinely if you EXPECT to get shot at for drawing a cartoon, the discussion should lie around the people doing the shooting, not people drawing...

See, I love taboo busting comedies like South Park, including the episode when they showed the prophet walking around in a bear suit, because it had a point. Contests like this are just dumb and equate to deliberate goading. Not only are you making unstable people irate, you just offend and ultimately alienate all other Muslims. It's the same reason why I hate that stupid Darwin fish on the back of cars. If you are going to object to someone's beliefs, why not try and be constructive rather than destructive with your criticisms?

Of course, you are absolutely right - people should be able to debate and lampoon things without being killed. You shouldn't be killed for any reason, even if you're being really dumb (save in specific circumstances where it is justifiable for defense).

I don't subscribe to any religion but do think the event organisers should share some blame for the injuries the security guard has suffered. Going out of your way to arrange a sponsored draw their prophet competition is trolling in the extreme. Thankfully the gunmen are dead.

They knew exactly what reaction they were likely to get. The event was designed to provoke.

Doesn't make it right, but this is one of those situations where common sense should really have prevailed.

If we'd put a thread up yesterday saying 'A draw the prophet Muhammad contest is being held in Texas. What do you think will happen?', I'm willing to bet a number of people would have called this result (or worse). It's a fairly obvious outcome.

Under the First Amendment it's their right to free speech. Same as it would be the pixy god believers right to protest peacefully.

Not even people who don't go round killing people follow it properly. Those who do follow like a normal human beings don't make a song and dance about it and go on living life decently and being a part of everyday society.

It's like most things in life, you rarely hear about the good, only the bad.
