This whole issue is largely about intolerance for other peoples beliefs however silly they might be, aslong as they aren't inflicting them on other people people should be free to believe whatever they want.
At extremes ridiculing someone's beliefs is just as bad as shooting at someone(s) for ridiculing their beliefs.
I understand what you are saying but the problem here is that the so called ridiculed in this case is something that is "alien" to our culture. And the actual lampooning is part of your culture.
It is a mockery of a religion when on one hand it's advocates can perform such atrocities whilst at the same time ignoring the whole if you kill one you kill all humanity angle. That in itself is worth mocking. It's like Cameron saying we are all in it together. It's stupid to say and deserves mocking. That is part of the British humour and has been for generations.
What about my right to not have logic and science mocked by the affronting religious texts. I have to tolerate that don't I.
There is fundamental (no pun intended) difference between an event like this and then taking those pictures and waving them in the faces of Muslims outside mosques. The later is confrontational at best the former merely insensitive. And again there was no need to be offended - they chose that path like another few million Muslims in American chose to go Meh and go on with their normal daily lives.
