I found this story a bit of a shocker. A country with devout Catholic Laws will not allow a 10 year old rape victim have an abortion which goes against the medical advice currently on offer.

I have no idea on the long term effects on the young girl from either the rape or having a child but surely there must be circumstances where the victim gets better support.

Horrible :(

What about the genetic risk for the child?

This said, she was brought in already showing, and has gone more than half-way already, so I can understand when they (the doctors) are worried about what an abortion could do to the girl.

They must have really thought about what is safest for her, right? With ongoing consideration?

Article is, probably deliberately, vague on the point, but the suggestion from the second paragraph is that she is already more than 22 weeks pregnant.

Aborting a healthy baby/foetus at around that stage is illegal in most countries, UK included (24 weeks) outside of legitimate serious health risks. Being only 10 and, presumably, not really physically suitable for birthing might be risk enough.

One of the problems is that you can't just "abort" a 24 week old baby, as they will still need to be birthed, or removed, and may survive the process - which rather complicates the issue.

Nonetheless, an awful story all round.

That is dreadful state of affairs. :( Hope she does end up getting an abortion and if not have the child taken for adoption.

shes been known to be pregant for a while though

The mother, who works in a school cafeteria, reported in January 2014 that her husband was sexual abusing her daughter, but the authorities took no action. When the girl’s stomach started to swell and ache last month, the mother took her to hospital fearing she may have a tumour.

After doctors revealed the girl was pregnant, her mother asked them to perform an abortion, but this is forbidden in Paraguay unless the pregnancy has life-threatening complications.

The girl was taken to a shelter and her mother was imprisoned on 27 April and accused of failing in her duty of care.

The stepfather is on the run.

also how disturbing is this

you can chop it up into smaller to remove pieces though...

Out of curiosity, do you feel abortion outside of extreme cases is generally in the interest of society or nto?

depending on the parents circumstances yes it can be.

if the conception is a mistake and the parents don't think they can support it aborting early (ideally morning after pill) is a sensible step they can have a child when they are more ready.

although the circumstances are slightly different here where the state will help a lot compared to 3rd world countries where they wont have such support.

Very tough one and an awful case, as ever not as clear cut as the pro-choice brigade would have you believe. Irregardless of abortion laws, I think the Paraguayan authorities are right not to permit this abortion at this stage.

yes but the life of the unborn child is precious because the magical sky pixie tells us so

Why is the life of a born child worth protecting and an unborn child not?

What are the chances the authorities procrastinated until the window passed although the window is hypothetical given termination is outlawed.

It states in the article that the rape was discovered in January but nothing was done about it.

January 2014

Terrible innaction by those it was reported to, but that wasn't when she got pregnant.

Only reason the Catholic Church thinks 'Life is Sacred' is because kids are easier to brain-wash and indoctrinate which keeps the cycle of Religion going from Parents to Children, more kids = More Catholics = More cash for the Vatican.

The 'Celibate' Priests are also known to like a go on them now and again...:(
