My brother recently upgraded his PC. just the mobo, cpu and ram..the case hdd psu re-used. He keeps having an issue where the PC will randomly switch itself on , can be any time of day, sometimes in the night. Ive read a few issues about some power management in bios but all a bit vague..

Note: under extreme protest from me, he didn't re install windows after the rebuild, just let the system sort itself out after a few reboots an driver installs

Not a fan of this but generally it's doable these days and won't be the cause of the issue.

I'd have a look in the BIOS setup for any options like wake on LAN, wake on keystroke or mouse. It is possible something plugged into the PC is doing some weird ****.

Otherwise, I am not going to say it was ghosts, but you should probably move house and have the PC exorcised

I have made the above suggestions, he thinks he has tried all apart from moving house.. . its a bit hard work as he's very basic at PCs im surprised it booted when he upgraded

hes just told me he has a USB wifi dongle plugged in, suggested removing that first.. its probably a real cheapo one

See what it's like without that WiFi dongle, then go for complete default settings in BIOS and re-install windows. If that hasn't fixed it, it leaves only demnon's as a possible cause. I'd start running. FAST.

Check the power switch pins are connected correctly from the case wiring to the motherboard. If that's OK then maybe an issue with the case power switch and / or wiring to the motherboard?
