Why did I not call the police?

Why did I not call the police?

My neighbour down the stairs had also heard something and had gone out to see what was happening. The guy heard the front door opening and took this as a signal to jump in his car and sped off. I caught a little of his number plate but not all.

I would have just assumed this guy was on the case and gone back to bed also.

maybe you thought if you reported them, they would try to get revenge on you , even tho they didnt know who saw the crime..

OP don't feel bad, after my experience with the police when my car got done over, I'd have done the same!

a few years ago we had a visit from the police after our neighbours garage got burgled. They asked me if I'd heard anything which I hadn't. What was funny, was their expression when I explained that my own garage had been burgled at the same time.

They seemed quite confused as to why I hadn't bothered reporting my own incident

"because I'm too lazy and it's easier to re-buy what was stolen than to have false hopes of you finding them", is what I should have said

luckily I had only noticed earlier that morning, and in my household....breakfast comes first! (and three coffees)

It's not even hard these days, don't need to dig out local police number. Just dial 101 and it connects you to local police.
http://www.police.uk/contact/101/

though for the OP's situation it is 999 he should be calling as soon as he saw the crime in progress, if they had a car in the area then a description of the suspect/suspect's car and a partial plate could have been very handy

Hmmmm, maybe your brain was half asleep at such an hour, hopefully you'll know better next time.

Last week I called the Police because a stray dog was running across the road trying to figure out his/her way back, poor dog. I cried!

PS. Glad to know what tanned means up north.

The Police probably wouldn't have done anything anyway. When my motor was done in a similar manner (window smashed, rifled through and few bits and bobs half-inched) they came out, looked at the broken window and just took a statement so they could give me the crime number. Then they were on their merry way. Even though we gave them a good description of the scrote responsible, they didn't even bother to try and investigate.

An hours hold crime with no information other than a description (which are useless without someone to match them too) is pretty much a dead end, and certainly isn't time critical. A crime in progress with vehicle, partial vrm, direction of travel and description of offenders thats just minutes old has a real chance of catching them.

for the same reason someone I know who got actively "touched up" TWICE in a packed train station, followed to a different seat, touched up again and STILL said NOTHING and just moved to the end of the station.
What THE Actual ****

Are you sure that's not them just being ashamed of what happened though?

Imagine telling a complete stranger that you were violated (insecurities etc).
