I currently have 2 x SAPPHIRE HD 7970 3GB OC with Boost Edition cards but fancy a change and maybe going down to a single card.

I am happy with AMD so would like to stick with them so my question is which R9 290X to go for a why ?

I have plenty of case room so I wont have any of issues with space.

If you can, I would suggest you wait roughly 1 month which is when the new 300 series cards are coming out.

If you cannot, just get this. Can pay a bit more for the matrix version, but not sure I see the point. If your crossfire works in games you play, you will get less fps with a single 290X card however. So best wait for a 390X which would beat 7970 crossfire with a single gpu.

+1 R9 290X over an R9 290 is worth the extra pennies paid. Also worth waiting for R9 300 series, though the low R9 290X prices are (apparently) due to a desire to clear stock of them before the R9 300 series arrive. Some are saying the equivalent 300 series card will be ~£300. A budget would help make a better choice, is it £250?

Thanks guys ... I did mean to say 290X :) and my budget £300 to £350 ish ....

I should pay more attention to what is going on as I had not see anything about the new R9 300 cards so no issue with time so I could wait a month.

One question as you can see in my sig my setup is not built for max everything should I be looking for a twin card setup or will a single R9 290X/300 be ok ?

As usual thanks for all the very quick feedback so far

I'd wait for the 300 series, so the prices may drop a bit.
Otherwise 290Xs i'd buy are: Tri-X, Vapor-X, PCS+, Lightning

Used reference 290x with aio cooler and corsair hg10 adaptor, cheap, cool and quiet

Even if he can get a used one for £150 paying for the cooler and adaptor he may aswell just buy new for the same money and have a warranty. Also I would just stick with what you have tbh, 3GB VRAM is enough (barely) for now until newer cards arrive.

Are we going to have the same problem of reference coolers being beyond terrible? And have to wait a few months for them to be a decent purchase? I wonder.

That is a very good question .....

I can wait as my setup is ok i just wanted a change as sometime this year i will replace my 3 monitors with something free sync i think ...

The total of my spend was £230, I would much rather have an AIO cooled card than a card that puts heat into the case when I changed from a Gigabyte Wind Force to a 290X my case temps dropped a fair bit but thats personal preference

I do like the idea of an AIO cooled card as i use an AIO on my cpu.

I own a 7990 so I am almost in the same position as you.
It is much better to wait until late June for the 390X and see how it performs.
There is big expectation on this card.
Most importantly, it will be a ideal card for 1440p/4k.
And at the same time check out any good 1440p / 4k 144hz monitors with free sync.

Just be ready to quickly snap up a 290x if the equivalent 300 series doesn't look better (in terms of price to performance). If it's 290x is better, they won't last long and would very quickly lose availability as they are bought and not restocked. I mean just take a look, its not very easy to find a HD79XX series card these days as the same thing happened to them.
