im thinking about going from a 2700k to 4790k which will cost £379.99 total. how much more performance would i get clock for clock say 4.6ghz?

theres no way i can go for Haswell-E due to price of motherboard & cpu

Not a lot, its not worth it tbh, I'd be surprised if you noticed any difference, 2700k is still a good cpu

But it doesn't just provide around 15% extra raw performance it offers newer features too right? Such as better memory support, PCI-E 3.0, more sata 3.0 ports and such?

Can't remember all the extra stuff over sandy but wouldn't this make it slightly more worth it?

I would just keep what you have and definitely overclock it, these chips are good at overclocking

Is it already overclocked?
EDIT: Fail, your sig says 4.6GHZ

Not worth it..

I went from a i7-2600k to an i7-4770k after I blow my 2600k up by benching and my 2600k was the exact same speed or faster then my i7-4770K..
My 2600k could clocked far higher.

If you really want to change/upgrade your CPU/motherboard then maybe you be better off going for an Intel 5820K & 2011 socket motherboard setup..
Maybe something like this bundle

If you want an upgrade, the only one that will give any decent increase in performance is going to the X99 chipset with a 5820K or better. Or best thing is to wait for Skylake-E/Cannonlake next year. Hopefully AMD Zen is good cos then it could be an option or at least push Intel to make better chips.

You will get a marginal performance gain if you go for the 4790k maybe 10%

Just not worth it in my opinion

I only made the move as my Z68 motherboard died and I didn't want to throw more money at the old platform. To be honest I wish I had done; there's nothing inherently wrong with the 4790k, but it's not worth the cost and runs around 10C hotter at the same clocks. Granted it is a little faster clock for clock.
