My second PC is a lounge PC stroke media server stroke Steam Machine type thing. I've had a GTX 670 in there for a while, but the old boy's struggling a wee bit now. I had initially fancied going AMD but have ruled it out.

I was pretty much decided on sticking a 970 in there, but I loaded up GTA V today and by God I swear I could almost hear the 670 cry. So I thought I'd best ask, is a 970 going to maintain 60 fps @ 1080p with this game with everything maxed?

I know folk will say you don't need everything maxed, and at resolutions of 1440 and above that's a fair comment, but I feel 1080p needs all the eye candy it can get.

Can someone with a single 970 at 1080p post frame rates and also let me know the maximum vram this game eats?

I could save myself from spending anything right now and just split my 980s across the 2 rigs and upgrade the gaming machine when a worthy card comes out... But surely a 980 is overkill for 1080p? On the other hand, if games are starting to edge toward the dreaded 3.5GB threshold at 1080p then I can't see a 970 lasting me a couple of years like the 670 has.

I don't know about hitting 60fps throughout but a friend of mine just bought a 970 and he says GTA is running lovely on his machine. Not everything maxed but he's at 1080p and seems to be very pleased with the performance.

I think you'd do fine on the 970 sir

Not necessarily no, i have seen some 1080p gameplay videos of gta5 with titan x and the framerate could be 50+, 80+ and 100 fps, depends, the cityscape can hammer most 9 series.

Everything maxed - simple answer is no!

I have it limited to 50fps borderless window with ALMOST everything maxed on my 970. It is very smooth and remains 50fps consistently anywhere on the map. With the exception of flying although I think that may be a texture streaming setting specific to flying.

Grass and postfx are the biggest fps hits in my experience. Putting both on ultra absolutely tanks performance. Dropping these down a notch or 2 really helps keep a consistent frame rate. TBH I would be surprised if even a 980 would be able to maintain a constant 60fps with absolutely everything maxed, even at 1920x1080.

If you mean everything maxed, then no, it won't maintain 60fps all the time. And neither will the 980. When I drop some settings down a notch I'm able to maintain 60fps 95% of the time. But there are some weird places in the game which make the framerate tank biblically. I don't think there's such a thing as an overkill for 1080p. Games which are properly optimised and tested are a rare breed nowadays. Most are shoddy console ports which often run like crap even on powerful machines.

As for the 3.5gb VRAM issue, it's hard to tell. Try as I might, I wasn't able to replicate it myself using reasonable settings. More often than not, the GPU will run out of grunt way before hitting the VRAM limit. I tried Shadow of Mordor with Ultra textures, allegedly requiring 6gb of VRAM, and it didn't stutter so maybe it's all codswallop.

Also, here's something else to consider: A 980 won't last much longer than a 970 will, both in terms of vram and sheer power. The 970 is supposed to get into trouble when a game uses up about 3600mb. It leaves just 400mb of available vram for the 980. Such a small gap can easily be bridged by poor coding, memory leaks and stuff like that. If the former becomes obsolete, the latter will follow suit not long after that.

It's not quite as simple as that. All cards can run out of vram, but when the 970 goes above 3.6 it hasn't actually run out it has to handle things in a different way. I owned 970s but I used then at 1440. I've considered it a 1080p card since then, but now I'm not so sure.

Anyway, I don't want to get into the vram thing too heavy here.

Thanks for advice folks, this is gonna be a wee bit of a tough decision. I suppose the 980s are gonna struggle for vram at 1440 soon so splitting them won't be such a big deal if the card I ultimately keep won't be wasted at 1080p.

But 980 SLI is the dugs nuts! :p

I have a msi 970 in my htpc and it runs gta V fine on my tv smooth aswell just put vsync on I don't run any AA though but all settings are maxxed

It does run really well, got the msi 970 recently. I have the advanced options off but other than that everything is maxed except msaa, got that off. Does run smooth, holds 60fps a lot of the time but does drop here and there

Should be fine on a 970, i run it just about maxed out on a 290X @ 1080p, i just have the MSAA off, and the Grass on High (as Ultra really kills it), everything else is maxed/on, i get 60+ in the cities just about all the time, and in the countryside with lots of grass, i only drop to around 52, runs superb, runs even better at night, anywhere from 60 to 100+ (mostly sits in the 70s).

You're right but my point was that even though the card doesn't technically run out of vram, the resultant scenario is the same: stuttering.

970 handles GTAV fine at 1080p according to benchmarks. Heck, it still beats the 290X at 1440p and trades blows at 4K. Of course you'd be silly trying it on 4K since framerate is so low. This I gathered from Youtube live benchmarks comparing the cards. Can post links if ppz want.

It should do just fine :) It's a powerful card, and as others said you won't be max-max-max settings but you should be reasonably close

i run ultra settings, except for Grass which i put to very high, 2xmsaa(with mfaa for 4x) tessellation, extended draw distance, max sliders ect ect on my 970 oced as seen in sig.

My card holds 60 in the city 99% of the time and in the countryside its between 50-60 depending on the area,Grass murders framerate.

vram usage at these settings is around 3-3.4GB,i have a 2nd monitor hooked up to tho.

1080p is getting too close to the vram limit, so 980 it is.

Cheers for the replies.

If you've gone for the 980 already... meh. But from Youtube benchmarks, GTAV at 1080p doesn't exceed the 3.5GB on any card. As I previously stated, the 970 even does fine at 1440p, still beating the 290x which has a bit more VRAM. The VRAM on 970 should be more than enough. But it's your choice. Especially with new cards coming out next month (could make the 980 cheaper in price if all goes well), all sorts of options. But some folks can't wait :P
