1440p or 21:9?

I currently have a 27 inch 1080p and want an upgrade but not sure which way to go, currently looking at :

LG 29UM67 (Freesync)

Running a 290 under water to power it, just wondering what other people's impressions are on either format or both? I'm really torn.

I think I'm swaying more towards the ultrawide as I will still be getting a DPI increase and it has freesync:

Current monitor: 81DPI
LG: 96DPI
BENQ: 108DPI

Any other monitors within the same price range that you could suggest would be great too.

At that price, and as you have an AMD card, I'd be seriously tempted to give the 21:9 freesync monitor a shot you know. If you get a good one with no backlight bleed etc, you could be laughing.
You'll be gaining on DPI too like you said which is good (and you won't know what you're 'missing' with 108), but you will lose a bit of physical height.

I've got the Dell 21:9 2560x1080 and they are very nice. I game on the Rog Swift now though mainly :) Gsync is bloody brilliant. Freesync has some issues and can vary monitor to monitor it seems, but again at that price I think it's worth a punt.

Freesync range only operates from 48-75 for those LG screens :( So unless you can maintain 48 fps most of the time, it isn't great.

But like wunkley said, it is a lovely experience 21.9, gaming etc. is a lot more immersive than any 16.9 screen and overall, the image quality etc. is superb.

You can see my review of the 29um65 in my sig although from what I have read about the 29um67, it seems decent bit better in terms of features and motion clarity + less input lag etc.

Personally I would avoid LG and any 21.9 IPS screens though:

- CS is absolutely crap for LG (ocuk were very good with me and my 29um65 though)
- backlight bleed and/or severe IPS glow is very common

Wow, good points there Nexus. Didn't realise the freesync range was only 48-75 either, that's useless!
On second thoughts, avoid the LG!
 
I'm not swaying so far in the way of the 21:9 now as I realise that it's actually smaller than my current monitor... Hmmmm
 
Yup, you ideally would want 34" 1440 for ultra wide these days now imo, same height as your 27"

But they are a fair bit pricier than the 29" models :(
 
I'm in the same boat Skyfall, I'm opting to just wait and see what happens. I want a 34"/21:9 monitor but the LGs just seem to have a few too many problems at the moment. Gsync/Freesync would be a bonus but I'm not interested in paying a huge premium for it. This is a multifunctional monitor I'm after, so the basics (bleed etc) are arguably more important for me personally.
 
I can recommend the Dell Ultrasharp u3415w. It cost a bit but what a lovely monitor. Gaming on it is actually quite good, better than my old AOC 29" q2963pm. On my old AOC i sometimes missed my older sammy 120hz even though the colors on it were horrible.. I dont anymore, couldnt care less about it and im never going back to 16:9 or TN and i have tried with stuff like the ROG SWIFT which got instant returned.
 
Surely 100Hz+ 21:9 3440x1440 can't be THAT far away can it? There's a market for it, so assuming there aren't any major technical hurdles to overcome, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear news in the coming months of some new models that push the envelope.
 
I moved form a 27" benQ gw2760hs (1080p / VA panel) to a 29" LG 29EA73 (2560x1080 / IPS)

pros:
- sharper screen, higher DPI
- better immersion. better for films (with the correct aspect ratio) and much better for games
- better pixel response times so less blur.

cons:
- blacks not nearly as good
- Actually colours in general are not as good (not bad, they are ok)
- typical ips glow (mines not that bad)


I dont believe you need to replace a 27" with something at least the same physical height. I straight swapped my LG for the benq so it didnt cost me anything but if i had to pay the extra £100 in cost difference plus whatever i lost selling the benq...not sure i would. I use a 34UM95 at work and in some ways it blows the 29" out of the water but, like the 29", it has similar issues and also some of its own qwerks as well. Ie, the OSD is slow, not something you expect on a premium monitor.

This is what I've decided to wait for along with 34inch and IPS, looks like I'm going to need a new GPU too. There is one more factor to be considered though, curved or non curved? I'm leaning towards curved but I haven't had any experience of using one.

Yeah I am waiting on a 34" 1440 VA/IPS 75+HZ with g/free sync now, was going to jump on the 27" 144HZ IPS monitors but cba with them as they have their own niggles

If we don't see or hear of anything by the end of June, we will probably be waiting till next year :(
 
The other issue with 21:9 is that you cant guarantee that all games support it and you may end up having to rely on community fixes for games. hopefully it will get more support over time though.
 
I used to have a Dell U2913WM 1080p 21:9 monitor, upgraded to the Dell U2515H 1440p 16:9 monitor. I appreciate the extra screen space, greater clarity, less need for AA in games, etc more than I did the wider aspect ratio. Obviously a 1440p 21:9 would be the best of both worlds for me, but the expense isn't justified unless you REALLY need that extra width.
