Mad Max: Fury Road

Just got back from watching this. Sorry but what a load of 'feminist' nonsense. I've got nothing against feminism per se, but the whole point of this movie seemed to be, 'Look! It's women being violent! And they're not even wearing make up!'

I just don't like feeling like I'm being lectured at when I go to a movie. Plus it played like one long car chase. Pretty boring. You didn't get a chance to learn about any of the characters. Still, the action was well done and it was exciting in parts.

Might not be a triumph of story, but the effort and cinematography are out of this world. Very well directed. I liked it. Gets a solid 8 from me and on my scale that's high. :-)

Can't wait for this, apparently the entire movie is one long chase, I like the sound of that. Out of the original trilogy Mad Max 2 was the best and this looks kinda similar.

Agreed. The Fast & Furious films had a little too much 'airbrushing' / CGI for my liking. In MM2, I liked the fact that it was just raw footage, and the foot was hardly ever off the accelerator :-)

I do really hope most of the FX are stunts and actual work and not CGI.. I know CGI is sometimes hard to tell apart from real life but the trailers I have seen look very real to me.

I was going to write that post! Beat me to it.

Just came out the cinema - calling it right now that it's going to be a new classic. Visually it's undeniably insane, some of the greatest set pieces / sequences I've ever seen. On top of that, I thought the plot was great and the world was totally convincing. I'd also like to pipe and say the film wouldn't have gained anything from being an 18.

Really very, very good.

Cheers for the review Nitefly. What makes Fury Road an 18? Just asking because I'm not that good with blood and guts, but MM2 was fine and I'm fine with Arnie films etc. Think MM2 was only an 18 because of that rape scene that the gyro dude saw through his binoculars.

Saw it last night. Bonkers from start to finish.

Highly recommended

Just sit back and enjoy the ride

A few people get disappointed when action films are 15s as it alludes that they 'hold back' in some way. I never felt like fury road (a 15) was holding back - if it were more violent or more sexual it would have been unnecessary. Hit the mark spot on with its content, I think.

You learn everything that you need to know.

The film opens with Max - a scarred beast - fleeing in a doomed attempt to survive on his own. By the final chase sequence, he has become a man again and is willing to die to help others survive.

The Wives are similarly transformed - they have lived in a vault and hide during the initial combat, but they are full combatants by the end.
The car chases, while brilliant, are a stage for the development of the characters. This film just didn't have the usual lame exposition that audiences now rely upon to clearly explain everything.

I didn't think so. I didn't care about any of the characters because they tell you next to nothing about them. I didn't feel involved in the story for that reason. I didn't care who lived or died.

The story of why they were chasing Max at the very beginning or what Furiosa did for the main bad guy would have got me more invested. I think they must have paid the script writers by the word on this film.

To be fair, if you haven't watched the previous mad max's then you are missing out on some of the plot.

I actually liked that they didn't have to incorporate really obvious scripting to spell out really obvious things to the audience like most things out hollywood these days.

For anyone interested in some of the reasons behind certain aspects of the movie like stunts, characters, lack of cgi etc. This interview with the director is a good watch

Was the video that motivated me to go watch the film earlier tonight

I loved that the script was very lacking per word. It's not like the first Mad Max film was a work of Shakespeare. I don't feel any of the above points really needed elaborating on, why were they chasing him?

Because that's what scavengers do.. He got chased in 2nd and 3rd film for sod all as well if I remember. They then used him as spare parts for the war boys.

Going to be watching this today in 3D, having never seen a 3D film before I am very much looking forward to it!

Do you really need something as superfluous as reason when the world has gone to **** and you see someone who has something you want?

I understand your point of view, but I think there is a misunderstanding on the pro-feminist debate in the movie. Of course they do it for marketing/appeal/box-office take, that is clear.

However...

Anyone with half a brain knows what would happen to a woman in a "real-world" fight situation like those portrayed in the movie (and not to mention what would happen to any of the guys in a "real-world" apocalyptic situation like that portrayed in the movie). The fundamental role of the female protagonists (Furiosa, the old ladies and the young lovelies) is also shaped by Max's involvement and support of them. At the end of the movie, if you think about it, the ladies may still undergo a horrible fate given their tenuous position in the new order. I know it looks like subversive feminist girl-power type fantasy, but in all honest I think it is more of a *reversed* feminist girl-power type fantasy when you consider all that befalls or may befall the women in the movie. It is a ridiculously clever thing to pull off story-wise, imo. And hardly anything to get worked up about.

I saw it last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is indeed one long car chase in the desert. But what a chase!

Great movie, amazing action , no plot. Brilliant.
easily 9/10, from start to finish its a crazy film but amazing for it.

I saw it in IMAX 3D . The 3D was pointless but good to see it on a big screen.
