I've sold some alloy wheels on eBay and am insisting on cash on collection. Is there any risk of come back to me via PayPal claim or should I be OK?

Buyer is from Romania and sending an employee to collect, which sounds odd. I will only accept cash, as I won't have proof of postage.

There is no come back, though I would be concerned a bit about that arrangement though. It sounds sketchy.

However if you get paid in cash, you don't need proof of postage as there isn't a trail of money for them to reverse.

scam. oldest one in the book as well.

but anyway they cant put in a paypal claim if they didnt use paypal.

what they normally try is giving you a cheque for X amount when item is worth less, then when it clears they say take your money and give the rest to the guy who collecting.,

then a few days later the cheque bounces

Don't take cheques or even Paypal on collection.

Cheque can bounce and with Paypal, they can claim and you'll be screwed because you have no proof of postage !

Check that the notes are real too, if they do actually bring cash. Have a fairly large friend on hand too. Try do the transaction away from your house.

People still accept cheques in 2015? You might as well accept an OIU note.

This.

The "I'm in another country, I'll send an employee" is a well known scam, but it's usually done with credit card.

This is a scam for sure. Only take cash and make sure it's real. I doubt this "agent" will even show up but if you can schedule your meet somewhere public and if possible get him to deposit the cash into your account at the bank

God you guys are a paranoid bunch, its only a set of alloys :p Its probably totally legit, if the guy doesnt turn up or wont pay in full with cash then just dont give them the goods, there is no risk here.

p.s. I have bought a set of speakers (£100) from eBay, paid by PayPal and got Phate from here to pick it up for me.

Basically did everything that as a seller shouldn't do.

It's cash on collection not cheque on collection. Just make sure you have a way of detecting if the cash is fake. Also since the buyer is Romanian then call the Police if they turn up in a large group otherwise have a knife at standby.

I bought a car carpet cash on collection the other day. The seller had no concerns about being scammed, maybe I should have scared him with a bit of an accent? :p

Honestly i must have sold hundreds of items for cash on collection only (car parts and building materials mainly, along with tons of domestic appliances) - you get a few slightly odd people but ive never had a bad experience.

That's my thought too. He's been texting me re collection etc and asked if he could pay by PayPal, but I asked for cash which he was OK with. If he was a scammer I'd assume he'd move on.

I just wanted to check there was no other recourse for him to claim back due to some stupid loophole. I will ONLY accept cash in this situation.

Might pick a note checker pen up to be sure. They're at my parents, so I'll make sure dad is around too.

Thanks all.

PS - I wasn't insinuating that Romanian = scammer, but that its a long way to travel for used wheels.

I sold an item and the guy who bought it was Polish and collecting on behalf of his brother in Poland, is that close enough? He gave me the money, I gave him the item. That's where the story ended.

Ive had a fair few foreign people, yeah. One notable one was a guy drove all the way from Poland in his Polish registered van to collect some sofas and a few other items. I thought it utterly random but apparently in Poland eBay isnt too good, nor is the quality of used items on there.

The guy is paying cash on collection, who cares where he is from or what the arrangement is?

He'll know when something is up when the alloys drive off with his car. :p
