ok, so ive finally built my pc and its running like a beaut right now.

only thing i have left to put in is the gpu...
currently got my r9 270x in there to keep me going.

Question is thought as it stands now, whats best for 1080 gaming (no interest of going higher for a long period of time)

the gtx970 or r9 290x? or is it worth holding out til the new amd cards get released and see how theyre priced and stack up?

If you're looking at higher resolutions in the future, then the 290X is probably better, or even just wait out for the new cards which should be just around the corner.

so, pretty much at the moment its just a toss up.

Is it likely that when the new cards come out they have the chance to ever so slightly drop the prices of the slightly older cards? or is that just wishful thinking?

The 970 Geeman1979 posted is pretty sweet, and if you manage to offload the games for 30-40 quid then it's a damn bargain. I'm personally an AMD fan but I have to say that the price on the 970 is sweet. As for new cards, I doubt they will have better price/performance but who knows, I wouldn't hold my breath though. Still, only about 2 weeks left to find out, wouldn't hurt to wait unless you're desperate to upgrade right away.

I'm currently on a 290x but out of the two I'd go with a 970 at the moment or a Sapphire 290x (non-reference), I'd prefer to wait for the 300 series though.

Probably not as amd will probably do what they did with the current gen last time and re-brand them as the one down from the top.

290x will probably become the 380 with maybe a few extra features and a price rise.

The smart money would be on the EOL deals on the 290x (ideally 8GB version) when new AMD cards are launch :D

Overall the 290x IS the faster than card out of the two, but it is at the cost of being slower than the 970 in Nvidia game titles and higher power consumption and heat, and possible iffy crossfire. On the plus side, the 290x is cheaper by quite a margin, and has 512MB more vram usable by games, and performance less likely gonna start falling of the the cliff as soon as new gen cards are launched like Nvidia side is...

For 1080p the 970 is great. Less hassle as well when NVIDIA put features in their hardware selling games that make AMD cards weep.

Check your case fits the card.

Check your boards BIOS is upto date (some GFX cards+board combinations need this).

970 with two free games is a good deal.

970gtx is a better card unless you going to try and play at 4k like a dreamer on a budget. :p

remove the 4k res which no single card copes with and youll clearly see especially in newer games coming out the 970 wins at 1080 and 1440.

the other option is saving money and getting a good deal on a 290x. thats only for money reasons though not the better card.

tbh id be waiting now with how close new cards are but then again they only oc 290x performance. just to replace the current 290 range.
