Mad Max: Fury Road

I disagree with the notion that there was no plot. There was loads going on in terms of explaining the lore of the world. Off the top of my head:

The fact that there is a pre-existing relationship with the Citadel and the Oil City - it'ts never fully explained, but it's a regular, necessary trip that's dangerous. It's hinted that's where they are going... but no, literally a left turn away from a city that we never get to see.

The notion that its common practice to keep prisoners as organ doners (as shown by the tatoo scrawls).

The fact the skull boys (or whatever they are called) liken their leader to god and even have a ritual before they sacrifice themselves to him, which involves spraying their mouths with what looks like a metallic paint (possibly a drug?).

The backstory of Max and Furiosa that's alluded to but never properly explained.

The fact people lived on sticks in the swamp.

No stupid ray guns from the future - the most effective weapons appears to be explosive spears!
So many details that are not pivotal to the story but add depth to what I thought was a totally believable world. It felt loving created with a lot of attention to detail. An overused word... but frankly, pretty awesome.

Saw this today as my first IMAX experience, was blooming great, sit back and enjoy the action and forget about the amount of fuel those bikes would have needed to run 160 days or any other silliness, loved it :D

Love love love this movie.
This is a cinematic milestone in action movie. A masterpiece. I am lost for words how much I enjoyed this movie. It is unapologetic in its commitment into what it wants to do, car chase, explosions, and more explosions and it does it with such authority and conviction. The fact that it's done with real explosions and not CGI, even the flame thrower guitar was real !

Charlize Theron is the strongest female lead since Ripley in Aliens, she kicks ass. She pretty much make Max her side kick.

I agree that there are so much details in this movie and the fact that a lot of it are not explained to you but let you either work out for yourself.

My heart was pulsing towards the end of this film and I felt it, the last movie I had that feeling was watching the restaurant scene in the Godfather !

I think over time this will be see as one of the cinematic masterpiece in action movie up there with Die Hard, Terminator 2, Aliens, The Matrix, The Dark Knight. This movie is incredible!

I think I might agree that it's in the same 'bracket' But I couldn't say it's better than T2. That is truly a masterpiece.

However, I also wouldn't say that Die Hard is anywhere near as good Fury Road or the others films on your list :p

Edit:

I would say the chase in Fury Road with Max at the front of the car is akin to the end chase / last 30 mins in T2... it just keeps going on and on and keeps on giving

I mean more in terms of every few years an action movie comes along that is head and shoulders above all others.

Sure there are good movies in between but I have not seen a movie like Fury Road for years. I don't remember the last movie that kept that pace and can sustain it for that long. Fury Road literally kicks off in the first scene and grabs you and doesn't let go. Good thing I didn't have a drink because I would've peed in my seat as I didn't want to miss a single minute during this.

Yeh I think T2 will hold that crown forever - that movie truly is brilliant on so many levels. (pace, plot, action, setpieces, emotion, depth etc)

Saw the trailer for the new one while at pics to see Fury Rd,

:( pretty much sums it up for me.

Though-out the film, I kept thinking that the way this film was shot, and the costume, special effects etc would be perfect for a reimagining of Fist of the North Star.

Watched IMax Cardiff in 3D

Solid 7/10 not sure I'm gushing with praise for this. Very enjoyable, felt it had to be the original director for some of it's foibles - obvious use of speeded up bits - musical score in places being overly dramatic for what was occurring on screen. Completely missed the femininninistic bits. Got a little stuck on the blonde girl being the one from Transformers that does nothing exciting and fails to actually act. Didn't quite get the point of mothers milk. Nor why the girls were being moved at all. The fat cousin mentions something about "all this over a family feud" wasn't sure if he meant Theron's character or the girls were maybe some apology gift to a relative in oil city. Liked the crows (things on sticks). Was wondering if any of the old ladies were in MM2, had a feeling of recognition. Once Furiousa realised it was all a waste of time the film almost looks at itself and doesn't quite know how to finish so we get capture the flag which feels ever so slightly rushed. Then the somewhat standard hooray the wicked witch is dead, long live the bird with one arm. Sounds like I didn't like it but I genuinely did. :)

I saw it tonight, enjoyed it immensely. Scorched retina's and ringing ears :D.

On your third point. I did not think it was a drug, I thought it was more a ritual given how (religious) 'brainwashed' the soldiers are.

George Miller said:
"I saw a documentary where young [Cambodian] soldiers would go into war, they had little jaded deities -- and before they ran into battle, they put them in their mouths and just held them with little straps."

Loved this film! I really do hope there is more and that they explore the universe more. a lot of things such as the other citys and mothers milk were touched but had room to be explored.

On the Warboys:
I Though the war boys spraying their mouth with silver spray paint was a reference to a cars chrome front grill. matches up with almost relic like significance of steering wheels. WITNESS ME BROTHER :D

Yeah, I think chrome had a special significance to them, like gold, since in general all the metal on the cars would be ugly and rusted, while chrome looks clean and unspoilt.

When Immortan Joe sprays the paint in Nux's mouth, he says something like "You will enter Valhalla shiny and chrome."

It was awesome when that guy got shot with arrows, then sprayed himself and shouted "Witness me!" before jumping on that car.

A few people get disappointed when action films are 15s as it alludes that they 'hold back' in some way. I never felt like fury road (a 15) was holding back - if it were more violent or more sexual it would have been unnecessary. Hit the mark spot on with its content, I think.

Maybe I blinked and missed something, but I thought the death of Immortan Joe could have been more graphic. It felt like it cut away too abruptly. Other than that, I'd agree that it didn't need to be any more graphically violent. It was intense enough as it was.

As for the feminism thing... It says a lot that some people are so riled about women actually having something to do in a film. To call it "lecturing" is pretty pathetic. The only thing I wondered was how some of the wives were quite so handy in a scrap, knew their way around guns, etc when they'd presumably been kept hidden away in the Citadel, but I can let that slide.

Hmm, interesting. According to Wikipedia, not all of the film runs at 24fps, because Miller sped it up or slowed it down as he saw fit in order to make sense of fast bits or keep slower bits of action moving. I did think something funny was going on when I watched, so that makes sense.

I got the feeling some of the wives (Especially the one who knew about guns) had lead a past life, maybe as a child?

It's a bit weird though because the mask isn't really 'attached' to his face as we see them put it on at the beginning

Yeah the beginning was definitely shot at a different FPS when he's running through the tunnel away. Looked very sped up to me. You'll be watching it all at 24fps but it would have been shot different (presumably 18-21fps or something).

We went to watch it at the new Odeon Imax in MK and it was pretty awesome.
I never really clicked with the old MM films, but loved this one.

I suspect it'll be one I pick up on disc when it's released as there are so many little details that I suspect won't be noticed until it's been watched a couple of times (possibly with pause getting some use).
What I did notice and like were the details such as the obvious mutations and affects of radiations, not just the obvious (two headed lizard), but little things like swollen thyroids, growths etc.

I hadn't thought about that, but you're right.

Having said that my brother goes to me as we're driving home "the warboys are orcs" (I can't remember his exact phrasing), but he's right, the warboys etc from the citadel are basically what Warhammer 40k orcs are meant to be, obsessed with fighting, speed, completely bonkers, and the leaders are the Nobz and mechboys, even down to the visuals and the way their vehicles work.
