Can anyone whos been reading the thread please tell me if it's known or strongly rumoured what kinda power consumption is expected of the 390X?

GTX980 level? HD7950 level? 280X level? 290X level? worse?

Who cares is the answer, performance per watt is the only thing that makes power consumption good or bad. If it was 350W but twice as fast as a 980, would it be 'worse'? What about if it used 150W, but was slower than a 980. It's likely around 290x power usage, possibly a bit more but with anything up to 50% more performance.

2013 wants it's way of thinking back.

Here in 2015 we have graphics cards with 0db fan modes, the most power consuming of which is the ~250w GTX780 Strix. With the R285 and the 970/980 all coming in 0db variants consumers have been somewhat spoiled and it would be a drawback to the 390X if the ones with after market coolers cannot do fan-less idle.

Personally I am hoping for 250w at most as I really want that feature.

not sure what people expect but titanx can hardly do 60 fps in 1920x 1080 with witcher 3 so its not like its a 4k go play card or such yet. 390x will show similiar feats we need 2 more generations until 4k starts to be easier.

In much the same way that people want amd to do well just to keep nvidia prices competitive, I view thermal efficiency on the performance/cost chart.
If they have the option between going for a 250W version and the chance to jam even more good stuff on that die I'll be wanting the latter option every time.

We had passive cooled cards 10 years ago. Stop being so last decade :p

Whose going to notice the difference between 250w and 300w. It's a few pence a month that you could find on the street. When 500w+ is mainstream il raise an eyebrow.

plus a faster CPU/MOBO !!!!

because you'll also be getting much more detail and texture in the games soon, just look at FC4..... you'll see another Crysis style of game in the next 3 years, another huge leap in technology, because 4K allows you to do this sort of thing

I think you'll find in Vulkan / DX12 in decent engines with no GameWorks / NVIDIA backing, you'll easily see well in excess of 60FPS @4K from the 390X. In any mildly intense DX11/10/9 titles, you're never going to see good results for 4K for any cards; too many bottlenecks and overheads in the software layer.

Just been listening to a british gaming podcast which mentioned a new gpu unvailing, and he can't speak about it until the 1st of June.
1st of June isn't that far away, could be a press release or the embargo for the benchmarks etc.
Could have some new gpu's to drool at within the coming weeks!

Which podcast? 1st would be a strange date, unless they intend to hold an event in the US the day before Computex starts, or something.

the era of cheap GPUs is gone forever, from now on i expect the cheapest top end card will start at 650 quid, but for 4K you'll need 2 cards, i find this a bit worrying

As I said, 4K in decent engines with Vulkan or DX12 is not likely to be an issue for the 390X. You want 144FPS ... it might struggle. I think you'll very rarely leave the 60-90FPS range unless you're using silly amounts of AA (rather unnecessary at 4K) or tesselation.

You only have to watch Oxide's demo of their RTS game in DX12 to see what's possible with a better API, and that was only being demonstrated on a single 290X.

Trying to remember what i paid for my 4870x2, £375ish or around that? Weird thnig is i got it from ocuk but its not in my order history.

Ha, if it's the first of June, this could very well be Nvidia unveiling the GTX 980 Ti. Try to steel the focus on AMD's launch and grab a few more sales :D
