Ireland votes on gay marriage - why should I care?

Getting pretty sick of this, it's been the top story all day on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 news. Why? A foreign country is having a referendum on possibly changing their law - whoopee doo. The subject of gay marriage is an interesting one but it's just not relevant to me unless we're talking about changing the law in this country. I guess at the moment I'm moderately in favour of gay marriage, so this isn't about sour grapes from a homophobe.

Two other stories that are more relevant to me that could have been the top story - the Bank of England's plan for a Brexit, accidentally sent to the Guardian lol. Or what about questions for Alistair Carmichael, who leaked the Nicola Sturgeon likes David Cameron paper.

Anyways,

It's relevant because if voted for, as it looks like it has been, then it's the first country to bring in gay marriage through a vote of the people. Considering this is a catholic country that's pretty significant.

So if it is outside of this country you are not interested?

What about what's happening in Syria, Iraq, CAR? What about world economies? What about the next US President?

Are you really so narrow minded that you think people shouldn't be interested in what's happening in the world?

They are the first country in the world where the people voted for the option themselves, instead of the peoples representatives actually voting for it.
It is rather significant, given we were told polls expected a No, and a strong Yes was presented.
It is also one of the closest countries to the UK. So as far as world news goes it is reasonably important.

You can have a gay marriage in Scotland, Wales, England, Republic of Ireland, but not in N. Ireland. In fact Peter Robinson of the DUP recently suggested we should have a legislative vote on making homosexuality illegal. He also when asked suggested he would be hopeful people would obey the law if such a vote passed.

Would someone please do us a favour and nuke us off the face of the Earth.
Thanks.

Scorza, in 1989, on the fall of the Berlin wall.

Thinks that affect geopolitics are of course important and I can see why those make the news. This isn't geopolitics though it's an internal law - I believe Switzerland often holds referenda on changing their laws; UK news reports about these votes are often consigned to a footnote, which is probably appropriate.

The thing that occurred to me about this is that, I suspect that the Anti's will accept this gracefully if it goes against them (especially if by a significant margin) which it seems it will. But can you imagine the Butt-hurt and whining if it had gone the other way!!

My biggest problem is this equality garbage. It's hardly equality if you don't conform to their views that your business is targeted, put out of business, sued or ousted from your job position. Or reputation completely tarnished by a lynch mob because the business you work for will be targeted. Remember the Mozilla CEO?

I heard women talking about Coleen Nolan in some stores early this afternoon and had to go searching to see what they were on about.

Apparently there was a huge ruckus days ago. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/p...ay-marriage-to-support-for-isis-10266014.html

I for one also can't stand it when world events conspire to place items of interest to me on page 2 instead of the front page of the newspaper

How are people expected to get equality if they say and do nothing but just sit there quietly. If a few businesses lose business and a few people lose their job so be it.
If you are referring to the cake company they broke the law hence why they were sued.

As for the Mozilla CEO unfortunately anything you say when you represent a company reflects against the company you work for. Mozilla supports equality and the CEO went on record as being anti-gay even by donating to anti-gay charities, what did he think was going to happen. It's no different than that silly cow that was in the news a while ago who tweeted that she is off to Africa and she hopes she doesn't catch aids, she was sacked before the plane even landed.

Pretty ******* stupid to compare gay rights to terrorism. This is the woman who has said anti gay things in the past but is all over people like John Barrowman when they come onto their show apparently.

It's what happens when thick people try and offer their opinion on current events.

I recommend sticking to your local news for now. National and international news deals with issues that wont revolve around you. Or other self entitled individuals.
