Craving a monitor upgrade like nothing ATM, gettng sick of the TV as a second monitor. Currently just rocking a 24 inch 60hz 1 ms AOC as a main monitor so nothing fancy.

I really don't know what to go for, I love my films so 21:9 is calling my name but 144Hz for the games. The pain right here is unreal. Probably could only afford to push out for a 29in 21:9 monitor so thats the budget. Help guys?

21:9 support is not guaranteed still, so it will take a lot more tweaking to use. Plus, the amount of vertical space a 29'' 21:9 has is less than a 16:9 24''. Click here to see the comparison.

Looking at your PC it's unlikely you'll be pushing anywhere near 144 fps in most games so unless you mostly play CSGO I'd say a 144hz monitor won't help much either.

IMO keep saving, the cheapest worthwhile upgrade I could recommend is something like the Acer 1440p 144hz FreeSync monitor, but that's 430.

If you can use freesync now and in future that's a great choice especially since you're coming from a 24'' so you'd just have a much better fov for almost the same vertical dimension of the screen and have the fluidity and smooth frame pacing due to freesync. Between the two features I'd suggest 21:9 anyway but I'm a bit biased. Also, for that budget you don't have much to wander about :p

21.9 isn't too bad for games, most of the recent big titles work very well with it and when they don't, you can just change 1 or 2 lines in a config file assuming flawless widescreen hasn't fixed it.

That one you linked only has a freesync range of 48-75HZ (it is the better one of the 29" monitors though) and plus your 7950 won't support freesync.

Also a lot of these IPS 21.9 monitors have bad bleed and/or IPS glow so be ready to play the lottery if you go with it and LG's CS is crap too but if you buy from ocuk, you should be in good hands for the first 28 days....

Personally I would wait another month though, computex starts on June 2nd.

Well we won't know till then :p Either way, no harm in waiting imo

I would still go for the freesync model:

- 75 hz so less input lag, smoother (when you can achieive 75FPS constantly) and better motion clarity
- more options in the osd like the black stabiliser (see more detail in black/shadow areas without affecting the rest of the the image colours etc.)
- future proof you more in case you ever do get a newer AMD card that does support freesync

One problem though, response time setting won't work with freesync activated so motion clarity won't be as good whe using freesync although you might not even notice the difference, just comes down to how sensitive you are to that type of thing. LG should recall screens and update their firmware to fix this but they don't care :(

I'm gonna be honest the main reason for this is my money is burning a hole in my pocket and I can't justify not spending it. Atleast if i spend some now my itch for shiny new things will be cured :D
I'll ask OC tomorrow or Tuesday when the ETA for that screen is if its a while away I might just grab the cheaper one

144hz just FEELS nicer. Even with just desktop work, everything is smoother.

I can't explain it. You able to go to the store and test a screen out? That will tell you if you want one or not.

No idea of the closest store to me that would even sell a 144hz monitor at least a decent one anyway. Everyone has told me it's great but I'll only have one and a 60Hz monitor next to it I'm worried it'll annoy me.

Having owned a 144hz rog swift, a 120hz samsung s27a950 a 29" AOC ultra wide 2560x1080 and now currently running a Dell Ultrasharp 3440x1440 i can say that i would never pick 144hz over ultra wide. Now in the end its a personal preference but i cannot live without the extra width on the sides. Games feel so much more immersive and i have only run into 1 game so fare that didnt work right with 21:9 and that was COD: Advanced Warfare which i didnt like anyway so no sad tears there.

My AOC 29" had a bit of blur to it but my current Dell is actually doing pretty well. I would highly recommend it just be aware that some IPS models have above average IPS glow but you always have 14 days of return if you are unlucky and get a bad model. There are also the samsung 34" ultra wide VA panel that many seems to love.

Interested in that DELL panel and want to justify spending the coin for it - sate my appetite by talking some more about your experience with it. :D

Ultra wide with gsync or freesync at 75Hz would be pretty decent but for motion clarity in fast paced games they aren't even close to a good 120+Hz TN...

Currently got both the U2913WM and ROG Swift on my desk so as to have the best of both.

A lot has happened in the past 24 hours. Managed to grab a 2500k and a 780ti so monitor will be done at some point over summer, sad for the delay but allows a lot better to be bought. I'm hoping something gets released from computex as someone said as that means prices may come down or the dream 144Hz/1440p/superwide may come out :D So I'll be back next payday with what new toy to buy :)

Interesting that you find the dell better for motion clarity phix as it has extremely high response time on tftcentral's review, perhaps tftcentral just got a poor unit???

Just reading another forum on 21.9 vs 16.9 and someone uploaded a couple of screenshots:

and minecraft, 16.9

21.9

That extra FOV is why I love 21.9 for games

Actually its not that bad even though the numbers would suggest it is. Looking at pcmonitors.info review of the AOC q2963pm it should be better than the dell but it just isnt for some reason. It is like the blur persisted longer on the AOC. The Dell doesnt feel like a standard slow 60hz IPS even though the reviews suggest it is when playing games. For pure gaming perhaps the Samsung 34 curved model would be better and i might actually pick one up in the fare future if nothing better has come to market but at the moment my dell and i are in sweet sweet love :P My unit has a bit over average ips glow and some backlight bleed across the top but ive gotten so use to it now that i rarely see it and turning the brightness down a bit helps a good deal. VA panels like the samsung would deff. be a big plus in this department. Overall I can recommend the Dell but i certainly would recommend looking at the samsung va panel to. Nothing compares to 3440x1440 in my book. Now bring on the OLED versions LG!!

Sidenote/edit: When i first got this monitor i noticed when reading these forums that moving the browser windows around with the blueish theme this site has caused darker trails to happen. That would fit with what tftcentral reviewed with its worse response times. Was quite sad at first but i cannot stress enough that this is only when viewing this site and it doesnt translate to games.. you wont notice it there thank god!

Hmmm interesting feedback, thanks!

That is my only biggest gripe with the 29um65, motion clarity so for my next monitor, I really want that area to be improved a decent bit, I don't need rog swift motion quality but just something that is better than my current screen, that and g/free sync tech. are my 2 must haves.

And yeah, the samsung 34" would def. be my preference over the IPS 34" screens, just a shame it is quite a bit more expensive!

Acer have a 34" 1440 75HZ gsync screen due this year I think so I reckon that would do me although I won't touch the acer version so hopefully another brand is releasing something similar for <£700

I just picked up the LG 34UM65-P for £380 and would highly recommend it! Yes it's 34" @ 1080p but i dont see any issues there. I was a bit concerned, but text is just as sharp if not sharper than my 23" previous monitor.

The extra viewing real estate is very useful!

Honestly, I'm kinda having second thoughts about my 32'' BenQ. It works well if you use it as a TV of sorts but it's a bit too large in general for normal PC usage. Don't even want to think about 34''. It does work great with 3rd person games, The Witcher 3, GTA V, etc. but others it's more of a mixed bag really. What I was surprised with was how underwhelmed I was with strategy games of all sorts (Endless Legend, Total War, Age of Mythology etc). I was expecting those to be the most enjoyable to play with a larger monitor (and higher resolutions) but it wasn't the case.

If the G/FreeSync monitors wouldn't be so wrought with problems I'd much more like a 27'' IPS 1440p 144hz one I think, or the Samsung 4K Freesync ones but those seem to have been messed up too. Bit of a ****** year for monitors it turns out to be actually.
