Good area to stay near Beaulieu? Winchester, Portsmouth, Southampton, etc?

My brother and I are going to Beaulieu for a day in June. As it's such a long drive for him he'll be staying the night beforehand and has suggested I join him and make a weekend of it.

Beaulieu itself is lovely. But as we'll be staying on a Saturday night I wondered whether one of the nearby local towns would be better for nightlife (a few nice bars - we are a bit old now for clubs).

So I'm after opinions on nearby places on a Saturday night... Winchester, Portsmouth, Southampton, Beaulie itself and other nearby towns.

Thanks.

For Beaulie, I'd probably stay in Southampton centre, plenty of cheap hotels and plenty of bar areas. The Jury's Inn is nice enough and close to Bedford Place, which is a student'ish area but nice enough bars and plenty of ladies.

I grew up there. If your looking to relax and avoid the city bustle, have a look at lymington. On the shore, nice harbour, a bar on the harbour, and excellent fish restaurant, a few good bars amd top notch hotels in the main strip. It's not get up and dance kinda place but you'll have a nice relaxing evening there. It's only 10 mins drive from Beaulieu itself. Alternatively Lyndhurst good food a few good bars etc right in the heart of the forest.

He's going with his brother, not his mom :p

Another vote for Winchester for me. Lovely little village.

Sounds like we should go to Winchester, have a pint and wait for it all to blow over.

Cheers.

I stayed there on a stag do a few years ago and was very impressed.

FAO OP: Portsmouth isn't even remotely close to Beaulieu assuming you are travelling by road or rail. Most of it is a complete ****hole also.

There's a nice camp site a few minutes walk from Ashurst train station, which has The Happy Cheese next to it and another pub I cannot recall the name of up the road.

Winchester is average and over priced. Many nights out there and just meh.

Southampton better for price and bars. Short drive really and good roads.

Portsmouth rubbish. To far, rubbish roads and nothing to special. (minus the navy and port attractions.

Beaulieu and new forest will be the best bet overall. But wont have the night life of Southampton or Winchester.

So depends if you want a place to stay or a night out afterwards.

*My advice based on 30 years of Hampshire, so rubbish in the eyes of gd :p
