Mad Max: Fury Road

I'd say it was more artistically similar to mad max 2 and 3 really. Which I'd say Rage was influenced by myself.

Just got out of the cinema and oh my god... this is now firmly in the top three WORST movies I have ever seen. The story was badly written with many head-scratchingly pointless scenes, the script was laughably and cringingly bad, and the music oddly paced.

Absolutely bloody awful film, and everyone in the cinema that I could hear was saying the same.

Well - there was always going to be one who thought it'd be cool to go against the majority I suppose.

I went in expecting a 2 hour pointless car chase.

I got a 2 hour pointless car chase.

I mean they end up exactly where they started

Except I thoroughly enjoyed the entire car chase. It was amazing !!!

At no point I went in expecting a great story, oscar winning dialogue and character development. It delivered exactly as it says on the tin, I got my my money's worth and then some.

It is currently sitting at 98% in Rotten Tomatoes and 89% Metacritic. It's not a perfect but it delivered what it set out to do.

You've seen the other Mad Max movies right?

I just watched this tonight. Whilst I didn't 'love' it, it was definitely one that was 100% worth seeing in the cinema, and a complete spectacle to behold. These are the sort of films that cinema is missing in my opinion, totally worth seeing. I would happily go and pay to see this a second time, maybe at an IMAX this time though.

"What a lovely day.... "

It is proof that the majority don't always get it right... and it wouldn't be the first time in movie history either.

I never understand this argument. I'm not saying i expected oscar-worthy script and character development, but at least some small semblance of it that allowed me to feel even a remote attachment to the characters would have been nice. Mad Max was more like a supporting role than a main character, and he delivered his lines like a wooden dummy.

At no point did this movie allow me to suspend my disbelief due the ridiculous way it was put together, and for me that is a cardinal sin.

EDIT - This is basically along the lines of what I feel, although I do think it's a bad movie. http://uk.businessinsider.com/mad-max-fury-road-review-the-unpopular-opinion-2015-5?r=US

EDIT EDIT - And another very relevant piece on the "feminist masterpiece" claims, which are simply ridiculous http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/2015/05/no-mad-max-fury-road-not-feminist-masterpiece-s-ok

I think when the hype dies down, and people make repeat viewings, more reviews of this nature will start to trickle through.

I am not even going to think about the feminist thing. I didn't go in thinking it is a movie about the women's rights movement. I went in to see an action movie. It's all about expectation.

What did you go in expecting to see? Did you not know it is a 2 hour car chase movie? And the fact that Max basically is an supporting character?

When I go into a film all I ask for first and foremost is to be entertained for 2 hours and that time flies by. I use the "how many times did I look at my watch" test.

I looked at my watch once in this, so that's very good.

As opposed to about 20 times during 12 years a slave...that movie arguably is a better movie, but it bored me to tears with the slow endless stills into the swamp and scenes that dragged on for longer than necessary when they have passed making its point.

In terms of repeat viewing. I would watch Fury Road again in a heartbeat. I will not watch 12 years a slave again, even if its a better movie.

Fury Road is not the best movie (it is quite shallow, plot is thin) but it is very enjoyable. How is it enjoyable depends on what you are looking for.

Therefore, what were you looking for going into this movie?

Is this a film that needs 3D? Quite a few people have said they've seen it in both and prefer it in 2D. Might pop to cinema and give it a watch this afternoon!

No, the movie was shot in 2D and then converted to 3D. The director even said he prefers the 2D version.

Raymond you seem to be not reading what I am writing, or are just selectively ignoring things to suit this "but I went into the cinema not expecting anything much" argument, which I find a tad bizzarre.

If I go to a movie that is rated a whopping 98% on rotten tomatoes, and 8+ on IMDB, then I expect a film with a passable script and characterisation that allows me to suspend my disbelief while watching a movie. I do not walk into a cinema to see a highly rated film thinking "Yeah its an action movie so Im not going to expect any good stuff other than special effects", and to be quite frank if you do then we seem to have a bit of a difference in taste.

I love action movies, I love sci-fi movies, I love dystopian sci-fi action movies, and for me to say this is utter **** is a objective opinion based on what I genuinely thought of the movie. I wish it were otherwise as I walked into the cinema expecting to be entertained, but the horrendous dialogue, awfully directed scenes, and general pointlessness of the plot sadly didn't allow me to do that.

You are of course are entitled to your opinion, I am willing to place what you consider pointless plot and bad dialogue below the fact that I was thoroughly entertained with what it is.

It's alright you couldn't do that and disagree with the reviews, horses for courses.

I'd say go for 2D; don't bother with 3D or IMAX, it's not really worth the extra in this instance. In fact I'd go so far as to say that either (or both) actually detract from it.

I enjoyed it but I'm going to reserve final judgement until I've seen it in conventional 2D :)

It's a great film in the same way that something like Sin City is a great film. It's absolutely style over substance, but the style is so incredible that it can get away with having very little substance.

Sin City is a much better film in artistic quality and substance... it gels everything together very well and it makes you suspend disbelief. A film doesn't need to have "oscar worthy" elements in all aspects, but if parts of it are so comically weak as to invite derision then it starts to fall apart. Sin City didn't have that problem for me, it was a comic book brought to life and the script suited it perfectly.

Anyway meh, as Raymond said, hourses for courses... :)

Loved it myself, simply an epic cinematic experience. Like transformers, who cares about plot, it's a visual feast and highly entertaining.

Leagues ahead of Transformers, not even comparable. The action in Transformers is incomprehensible - you could achieve the same effect by throwing pots and pans around the kitchen with a strobe light on. The action in Mad Max makes sense, and you can see what is happening, who is where, what they are doing, how things are moving in relation to each other.
