I'm a complete idiot, PLEASE HELP to recover my lost data

I had a similar kind of thing when my usb stick failed. Used Recuva and got like 95% of the stuff back. But if I was you I would take it to a company. Not worth the risk!

That's why I love this forum - Everyone is so very helpful and very prompt with responses, thank you all ever so much.

I'll keep you updated with how I get on, although I'll be happy even I get around half of my data back and therefore I'll be trying to recover it myself.

I have to go away tonight for 1 week so won't be able to try anything until I get back. I have disconnected the drive in the meantime.

Is it best to start the recovery process ASAP or can it wait until I get back. i.e. is there less chance of recovery the longer I leave it?

Shouldn't make any odds to leave it for a week aslong as its disconnected and nothing is likely to do any additional writes.

Write blocking devices have never been able to prevent HDD electronics making firmware led changes to a disk. That goes for IDE, SCSI and SATA mechanical devices, as much as SSDs.

Yes, but SSD's have a tendency unlike any other types of drives to erase sectors marked as unused as part of their wear levelling process among other things. So it's very different to attempting home data recovery of a mechanical drive. You are very likely to lose data.

If it's disconnected, no need to worry. It'll stay just as it is until you get back.

Enjoy your time away. :D

Most of us have done this at some point, I lost all my photos of my honeymoon because I didn't back up.

I now backup in triplicate, I have my main HDD which syncs certain folders to my NAS and also I pay a small amount of money per month for unlimited online storage where I also incrementally sync said folders. Always remember that a hard disk drive WILL fail. (Although I am aware this is not what happened here).

Hope you get your data back.

Ultimate Boot CD is awesome. Still regularly updated and has all the utilities you need in an emergency.

Go to a professional if the photos are really important though.

I think the best process is to create a bit for bit copy, and then try to recover from the copy.

I've got some nudes of your missus that she sent me, you can have them back if you can't recover yours.

If all you've done is remove partitions and not written new data to it, then Testdisk will recover 100% of the data by recreating the partition tables.

Also, lol for not having a backup.

Good luck getting the photos back!

As someone has already mentioned, once you've got it sorted "invest" in one of the many free cloud backups, Onedrive/Dropbox/Google, and avoid headaches in future! :)

I felt sick just reading your post, I don't have any advise other than wishing you good luck and hope you get as much as you can back.

I do this too, all of my pictures are stored on a NAS which auto-backups to Google Drive nightly.

I then take monthly backups to a separate USB drive to protect against any Cryptolocker type of losses.

My laptop went completely in Sixth Form losing all my computing coursework only a month before I had to hand it in. I did have a backup although it was weeks out of date. I paid to recover data from my hard drive and I got most of my data back to be fair, except for the coursework that I actually needed.
