Do not power up a solid state drive, it's own internal algorithms will wipe data even if a write protector is used.
Is it best to start the recovery process ASAP or can it wait until I get back. i.e. is there less chance of recovery the longer I leave it?
Write blocking devices have never been able to prevent HDD electronics making firmware led changes to a disk. That goes for IDE, SCSI and SATA mechanical devices, as much as SSDs.
That's why I love this forum - Everyone is so very helpful and very prompt with responses, thank you all ever so much.
I'll keep you updated with how I get on, although I'll be happy even I get around half of my data back and therefore I'll be trying to recover it myself.
I have to go away tonight for 1 week so won't be able to try anything until I get back. I have disconnected the drive in the meantime.

Most of us have done this at some point, I lost all my photos of my honeymoon because I didn't back up.
I now backup in triplicate, I have my main HDD which syncs certain folders to my NAS and also I pay a small amount of money per month for unlimited online storage where I also incrementally sync said folders. Always remember that a hard disk drive WILL fail. (Although I am aware this is not what happened here).
Hope you get your data back.
