I've Googled this but can't find an answer. How does my Ford Focus know to sound an alarm if I have a passenger in the front seat without their belt on - but not when it's empty?

Thanks.

This is what I thought.

Seriously, I was asked by my daughter and just wanted to confirm the weight thing. Thanks.

Pretty sure it's just a switch in the seat pad. If you press down on the seat pad with your hand you will find the spot with the sensor. Witchcraft is way better though.

There's another switch in the buckle so it knows when you've fastened it

There's a weight sensor in the seat. Annoying, it means that if you do ever end up carrying a heavy item, I've at times had to put the seatbelt in to stop my car beeping at me.

Nothing new, my 78 Saab lights up a "Fasten Seat Belt" sign if either seat is occupied but the belt isn't on :)

I managed to turn the sensors off in the passenger and drivers seats using an android app and a bluetooth OBDII reader.

App is called Carista, only paid for it to remove an airbag light, but found this option in the custom mode and as i was annoyed with it going off every now and again when i had my gym stuff on the passenger seat or a shopping bag, decided to just turn it off.
