Upgrade Graphics or Whole PC

Hi all,

So I've mashed together a PC from some old stuff I had lying around, purely so I could play Project CARS with my Logitech G27. It seems to run it ok but I'd like to be able to turn up the detail and get better FPS, but I'm not 100% sure where the bottleneck is - the gfx card or the CPU/Memory.

Specs of the PC are:

- Quad Core Core 2 Duo (Q9400 I think)
- 8GB DDR2 Memory
- Unknown model of motherboard out of old HP desktop (its around 4-5 years old I think. PCI Express v2.0)
- ATI Radeon HD 5870

Now I know this is not going to set the world on fire, but will I get better performance by sticking a better graphics card in therere or is it a bit of a lost cause and I should upgrade the whole lot?

I'm a casual gamer and this rig is only really going to be used for one game!

Thanks :)

If you don't want to spend big, get any second hand graphics card at 60£-100£ and you should see a significant bump in performance. That's where the bottleneck is.

Alternatively, get a new PC + full HD resolution (or more) monitor.

My guess would be it's the CPU and only DDR2. Try turning down all the graphics settings and see if that improvces FPS. If it doesn't then it's new PC time.

Settings are all at medium/low already, I get an average of 20-25 fps but it lags if I put crowds and more detail on.

You definatley need a new PC. Mine is similar specs to yours and it's definatly new PC time for us.
I'm waiting for the new Intel processors to come out and see what prices are going to be like
