HP DL320 G6 - 2U equivalent?

I have a DL320 G6 at home (well actually it's a P4000 NAS thingy but hardware wise it's the same) - but it's too noisy. I'd like to keep the motherboard which the Storage Server COA is assigned to, so I'm trying to find if there's a 2U chassis that I can transfer most of the parts over to and take advantage of the larger fans to keep the noise down a bit!

I strongly suspect this is something no one will know - but who knows?

DL380 perhaps. However HP stuff isn't known for having low noise at all!

What is your budget? Have a look at some 2u Supermicro chassis, fans are quite good in those.

Dell R520s are probably as silent as it's possible to get a rackmounted server, other than their 1U R220 which is a desktop PC in a different box.

I wouldn't expect so. If you look at the Quickspecs for the DL320 and DL380 (both G6), the PSUs are on different sides to start with

320 mobo into a 380 no way, 320 looks like it has more of a entry level motherboard size where as a 380 is a full on dual cpu motherboard and a different layout altogether

It does look like there's not a close equivalent

DL180 is a bit closer but still wouldn't work. Quite surprised in a way as the number of G6 motherboards must be quiet a lot - you'd have thought they'd have tried to standardise!

What is the dl320 in? You could get a better acoustically sealled rack cabinet.

If I could afford an acoustic rack I might as well buy a newer quieter server with a new OS licence

I had the 380 at the bottom of my bed and it was horrific! haha i think bunny has a good idea in the acoustic rack!

Second hand? Check the bay. Saw a client a week or two ago who had one from the bay super cheap.

One of the main noise components for a server like that are actually the fans in the PSU(s)... and I think both the models you quoted may have the same PSU(s).

Does it have to be rackmount?

I'd recommend building yourself... whether rackmount or not... in order to get something reasonable on the noise level.

ALL rackmount kit is designed for datacentres where noise isn't a concern but cooling is...

But you can buy barebones rackmount gear and use most of the bits you have already while replacing the fans and PSU... that should get you to a reasonable noise level.

DL380 is the 2U brother of the 1U DL360. The DL320 is a bit lower end than either. As for low noise, what about a ML-series HP server, as the tower cases allow for larger diameter fans that spin slower for the same airflow. You can also get rack kits for the ML-series servers

I think I have to abandon the idea of a larger case, it doesn't look like the mobo fits anything else
