So as the title suggests, a mate has a 2002 Passat 1.9TDI 130 Sport for sale with 140k on the clock. It has FSH up to 120k miles and he changed the oil/filters himself at 130k. Good overall condition, although needs 4 new tyres within a few thousand miles.

I reckon I can get it for £1200.

Ideal!

... but it has now been sat for 5 months outside.

Any advice? Things to check? Battery is flat and both front/rear discs are rusty as hell, is that likely to come off or will it be more than surface rust after that amount of time?

Cheers

I had a PDI engine in my old golf. The turbo went at 80k and apparently that was quite common. Mine was the 150 bhp version so not sure if it's different.

When replacing my brakes I had to have one of the hub brackets tapped as it threaded. Not a great expense but something to look out for if you're planning on doing them yourself.

The 1.9 PD engines are bulletproof tanks, as I said in another thread, my Dads 1.9 PD A6 is on 160,000 miles on its original turbo, and my Dads mates ex-taxi 1.9 PD Octavia is on 430,000 miles and it is on its second turbo.

I expect the PD150/160 had a different turbo perhaps?

I thought the turbos in these 1.9 engines were pretty good, from what I've read they're "how a diesel should be". I'll have to take it for a long run I guess to see what it sounds like.

And yeah thanks for the heads up, I will be doing all work myself... starting with fresh oil and filters and see where we go from there.

Edit -
ex-taxi 1.9 PD Octavia is on 430,000 miles and it is on its second turbo.

lets have more of the same with this one please :D

The 130 is a solid lump. Had one in my Fabia VRS and seen people tuning them to LOLEXPLOSION figures.

You do have to put in stronger rods and things once you get up to crazy figures. I don't think you'd want to go much past 200BHP without doing a little internal work.

Yeah, when I was still hanging around Briskoda, the limit for stock internals was kind of agreed upon to be around 180. The Darkside remap was probably the most popular and took it up around there. But I've seen the 130 built with over 300bhp and a 4x4 conversion. It's nuts. Exhaust stack coming out through the bonnet so when you're rolling coal you can't see **** as it just blankets the windscreen.

I've seen companies claiming 170bhp with 400lb torque with just a simple remap. Tempting

Anyway, any other issues I should check apart from the usual buying second hand things because it has been sat for a while?

I'm pretty sure I've seen 1.9 PD videos of cars with more than 300BHP, I can't look for them now though, perhaps I'll look when I get home... :p

Anyway, sorry for going off topic slightly OP.

Can we interest you in advice on how to turn your Passat into a drag racing smoke machine? :D

You can get the PD130 in a Polo 9N too. Imagine... 170HP and 400Lb/ft of torque in an otherwise stock Polo... Sleeeeeeper. :D

Anyway, back on topic. I'd imagine the new car checks would cover it really. Make sure nothing is wet which shouldn't be, nothing is seized which shouldn't be, and that is runs and drives fine.

I paid £950 for my 2003 Passat 130 a couple years ago with similar mileage (145k) which needed nothing more than a service, renewed brake pipes on the rear, and flew through it's MOT. and sold it a year later for £1k with 155k on it. If it's from a friend, I would have expected it cheaper than £1200, unless it's just had it's timing belt done (which would have been due last year) and a fresh service & MOT. Tyres aren't expensive assuming it has standard wheels (read: small), but still.

It doesn't sound like a "great" deal to me with sounding like it needs around £300 spent on it in the coming weeks / months (£225 for tyres and £75 for service, depending on timing belt requirements). That being said, they are a great car, and I would have another for sure. I didn't really want rid of my old one, but the old dear needed a new car, and my mate was needing to shift his 330i cheap, otherwise I would have still been running it.

If it's in outstanding condition otherwise, and you are aware of whats needing spent, then they are a great car. So much so, my father in law went out and bought one after a couple trips to Londonshire in mine. I also retrofitted cruise control and comfort indicators, along with a bluetooth head unit, and it made for an almost perfect daily hack.

How do you propose he does that exactly..?

Taste test? :p

Maybe, Just maybe check the FSH. And then ask the owner what oil he used when he serviced it himself.

We went to look at one years back and the dealer said it's just been serviced. I asked what oil and he said always the best I only ever use 10w40 mobil 1. We walked away at that point

Timing belt was done at 135k so that's alright. You make a good point though, especially if you got yours for less than a grand I will ask. He originally wanted £1500 but that's way out of the question.

My mind went straight for "how will he physically check what type of golden stuff the black stuff was?" :p

Fwiw what is the correct oil for these things?

I've got some Fuchs left over from my Leon 150 tdi.
Same oil, surely? Bottle's been open for around 5 years.. Bin it?

I'll check what oil it is when I get home. I have the same oil in the Polo because it runs better with thicker oil in its old age. It was burning the thin stuff and stuttering a little as well. :p

To be fair though, mine wasn't a Sport. But, to be honest, at this age and mileage, I personally think it matters little. Probably would have preferred a 6 speed mind you. Might have paid a hundred more or so for that.

At the end of the day though, it's a great, cheap car for firing about in. I loved (well, loved is a little strong perhaps) mine as a daily hack, and it wasn't particularly great body wise (the all too common rusty wings and bootlid).
