Thoughts on Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 125 PS Titanium Navigator

200 on overboost :)

It is not the same engine as in the Fiesta ST, as far as i am aware, i didn't think the Focus had overboost ( the latest 1.5T 182 in the Focus certainly doesn't)

For example the mountune upgrade kit for it only puts it to 200bhp which is what i would have thought the overboost would have done anyway with that torque increase: http://www.mountune.com/index.php/services/performance-upgrades/focus/focus-1-6-ecoboost ( for the Fiesta, the car already overboosts to 200bhp so the mountune kit puts it to 215bhp but with the same torque output as the Focus mountune kit)

All seems a bit confusing.

I imagine that something like this will be geared to be running at a good percentage of its max available torque at cruise speeds.

Hardly! If that were the case you'd barely be able to accelerate from a cruise condition, but they are actually surprisingly sprightly.

My wife has a 700cc Smart Roadster Coupe. At a steady 70mph the inlet pressure is rarely higher than zero unless going up fairly steep hills.

Is that in "top" gear or do you have to drop a cog, is this a six speed gearbox (many seem to be these days even on quite small cars Or are they coupled with a 5-6 speed auto)

(Just asking, I genuinely do not know)

Just to be clear I am talking torque overboost not HP

I believe the Fiesta ST boosts both

That must be the difference then, though I thought one would rise with the other (ie if torque increased, so would bhp on overboost) - but i must confess i don't really know how it all works :p

The NM torque figures given by Ford and the bhp increases with the mounetune upgrade kits do hint at some sort of difference though.

The new 1.5T 182 definitely doesn't have overboost as an alternate torque figure isnt given anywhere in the brochure like it is for the ST's) and the 0-62mph time is 8.6sec :o.

I guess that means the older Focus 1.6T must have some sort of overboost, i guess the Fiesta's is tuned to give out more bhp though.

you might well be right - just looked at brochure and it shows 1.6T 150 has overboost (to 177 lb) but 182 is always 177

but then that doesn't match up to reviews

anyway going OT now so that'll do - it either has or hasn't - I'm not sure

its still a nice engine though :)

OP: Is this a facelift mk3?

Motorpoint and other 'near new' high volume near-new car retailers will have loads of used Focuses (Plural may be Focii?) on sale in this price range.
They depreciate heavily though - If you are looking pre-facelift why not get one a touch older?
The 1.0 engine everyone raves about. I can see the 125 being more than capable of powering the current Focus.

I recall reading something about the 1.0 100 vs. 1.0 125 and the torque is near identical between the two if I recall. Also they may have a different turbo but are otherwise the same engine (the 100 and 125 would remap to exactly the same otherwise).

People are correct in saying that this engine can come in a 140 form also.

My Dad had a nearly new 2011 Focus 2.0 TDCI estate. I don't know what other extras it had other than Sat Nav.
It had plenty of power and my ownly dislike is that the centre console reminds me of a Nokia 3310!

I think you are getting your models mixed up. The 2011 your dad has sounds like the MK 2.5 given your description of the dash and the fact that the new model only came out in 61 plate so late 2011.

Brand new Focus is now out hence the previous models (late 2011 - late 2014) dipping in price a bit.

It was certainly a 2011 model, the plate I do not remember, but I still have photos from the advert we made to sell it when he got a company car.

I am 100% sure it was a mk3 albeit an early one! I bought his old mk2 from him. Hence my comments on the dashboard dislikes of the mk3.

The older model had a crappy radio setup which looked like a Nokia 3310 as you describe whereas the newer one had a better unit with the display up on the centre console separate from the actual radio control

I'm on about the MK3:

The older one (mk2) just looks like a standard 10 year old car dash stereo.
Ford really wanted the mk3 console to be a minger. Almost like there was a prize for whichever idiot could fit the most buttons onto it.

Yeah, the Sony unit they use in the Titanium and X models is as if someone took an handful of buttons and threw it at the console :(

I have this exact model on a 63 plate and I really like it as a short journey daily drive and it actually is pretty good on motorways as well.

I previously owned a Mondeo ST TDCI and a Octavia VRS (petrol) to put my following comments in perspective. I was worried when I first considered switching to a newer car with a smaller engine, but financially and family/work wise it made sense for my situation.

When I test drove it, I was pleasantly surprised the engine is not slow to accelerate when underway, really quiet and not terrible on fuel (but nowhere near the quoted figures). I generally get on average 42mpg combined. I do notice the engine when pulling off/out though, both the Mondy and Octavia were far more responsive as to be expected, but I have never felt like it was dangerously slow either.

I have recently done some longer motorway journeys (Cornwall and Sunderland to and from Stoke) and I actually really did not notice the lack in power, it accelerates to 70 without issue and further (not that I have ever tried of course). Cruising was comfortable and the DAB/Navigation are both features I could not live without now that I have had them.

I would not hesitate to make the same purchase again in my situation (20-30 miles per day stop start) and longer journeys at the weekends. I also considered the 1.6T but after owning the 1.0 125 for 4 months I doubt I would have liked it any more.
