Will 4-way SLI Titan X last me 5 years at 1440p?

buy yourself 2x 980ti ( £1200)

3 years later do the same with the top end cards

that will still save you money and give you top edge performance

This is the most sensible option for 1440p at the moment, if you have the money.

4x Titan X's is just simply a waste of money.

Are you talking game specific here?

Witcher 3 fully maxed @1440p

4 TXs @1441/2002
5960X @4.0
FPS top left corner

@stock they do about 122fps

GPU usage 4 up is still not the best but it should improve with time.:)

If you are using 4 TXs you don't run @1440p as the image quality is nowhere near as good as it is @2160p.:)

Buying a top end set of cards now, to expect it to last 5 years...as a previous post on this forum said, would be like taking the top discrete GPU of 2010 (GTX 580) and comparing it .

Considering that one 970 is equal to 3x580s, do you honestly think anyone would consider 4-way GTX 580 today?

So also considering the cost of the 580 at the time (500 USD) to the 970 (350 USD) - you are looking at about a 4-5 times more costly approach. It doesn't make sense and so the rule holds. The performance gap is rapidly narrowed by successive generations - it is always the case. If you wait about 9 - 12 months from now, I would be willing to bet that the upper mid-range Pascal (that replaces the 970) will be giving you performance that closely matches a 980 Ti. Is that 9 month grace period worth the 2x multiplier in price? That is up to the buyer to decide.

Will it last you 5 years? Maybe. But at some point a new DirectX will come in or a feature will be introduced that'll give you the urge to upgtprade.

If you buy 2 980Ti now and spend another grand on GPUs in 2-3 years time you'll spend half as much and be able to max everything for 5 years.

This is probably the best piece of advice I have read on here!

keeping a titan for 5 years?

will probs be worth £100 each in 5 years, thats not a great return..

just get rid of 3 of them and run 2.. or 3 max..

upgrade every year instead with the money you would have lost on the other titans.

Let me see

2 years ago I bought the original Titans with 6gb of VRAM which is great @2160p.

This month AMD will launch their Fiji top of the range card with 4gb of VRAM which is not great @2160p.

So for 2160p usage my 2 year old Titans are a better option than AMDs latest Fiji cards.

:D:p:)

Without having seen Fiji's performance that is a bold claim to make indeed. But my point was fairly clear, spending huge for the best performance today then settling for that same performance 5 years later in much tougher games with MUCH faster cards available is still daft.

Fact is that spending for what in most cases is excess performance today for average performance 3 years from now is just not sensible in any way shape or form.

Buy two almost top end cards now, buy two almost top end cards from the next gen and two almost top end cards the year after. You'll have not much lower performance today higher performance with the next gen cards and WAY more performance with the generation after that.

The question wasn't "should I spend £4k today and £4k next gen and £4k the gen after that, it was should I spend £4k today and keep those cards for 5 years", the answer is no.

Actually this is the OPs question

Will 4 Titan Xs last me 5 years at 1440p if they are overclocked?

We don't even know if he will buy 4 or what his circumstances are so you should not jump to conclusions.

You posts would be far more interesting if you were not so biased toward AMD as it clouds your judgement.

As for myself my next serious purchase is going to be some Fiji cards as I like technology and experiencing it first hand. HBM really interests me and I intend to find out exactly what the pros and cons are and will have fun doing it.:)

OP won't keep them for 5 years even if they do buy them. Temptation will come along and they'll be on the MM or eBay before year 3 :).
There probably is an ultimate configuration for a time period.12GB is a bit much right now @1440p and what you need is enough processing power to eventually fill the memory(as new games get released) while games are still playable at decent settings.
At 1440p, 2x Titans for 2 years?
With DX12 will that change things? Will the cards be able to run at decent settings for a longer period of time?

Would 4 X Radeon 5870s cut it now, or 4x GTX 295`s?

Answer is NO! They wont last 5 years 3 to 4 maybe, but 5 is cutting it with graphics cards.
No matter what rig you have now.

I still have a pair of HD 5970s for some quadfire action and they are not bad as long as you don't go crazy on the settings.:D:)
