I own a 290 and shops at M&S? Where does that put me....
But... sadly despite people saying they are only joking etc. some of them are actually being serious when they say "value brand, lidl shoppers" etc. it really is quite embarrassing

Just look at most of the TX owners across various forums, they act like they don't care about the 980ti and nvidia more or less giving them the fingers but really you can tell that they are pretty peeved of by some of their posts, if price wasn't an issue for the nvidia posh club then why get annoyed?
For myself, it is largely about bang per buck as I just simply don't see the point of paying more for something when it isn't worth the extra.
When I was deciding between the 290 and 780 this time last year, there was no question as to what to go for, the 290 performed better overall, had mantle (which improved my performance drastically in bf 4 where I have over 1000 hours and will probably get another 500 hours), had 4GB VRAM etc. but not only is/was it a better card overall, it was
- cheaper by about £60
- and you got the amd gold award so I got the choice of 4 games iirc (which I sold on for about £40 thus making the card even cheaper and more bang per buck value
Is/was it worth going with the 780 just because it is by nvidia? For myself, nope.
Either way, the fact of the matter is, if people are looking for value, "pound stretching" etc., they most definitely aren't going to be looking at £400+ GPU's, they will be looking at the £100-200 mid range cards.
If AMD bring out a 980ti killer, then they can charge higher for it and the enthusiasts who care about having the best/fastest will pay for it, obviously it needs to be priced accordingly though and not have a TX price tag....
And yes people don't realise how important marketing is, just go and look at how much money these companies put into marketing especially the likes of Apple and Samsung, if it wasn't important to sales then why on earth would they be putting millions of pounds into that area? Brand power and marketing is the most important thing to a products/company's success, just compare android phones by Samsung to the likes of HTC.
EDIT:
And if AMD fail with this card then I have no problems jumping to a nvidia 980ti. There are only 2 things that will dictate which brand my next card will be:
- g/free sync monitor choice for 34" 1440
- how batman will run
