Dog Eating Festival

I saw your original post about us getting goldfish from fairs and the like... with the expectation of keeping them as pets.

However, I'm fairly sure, statistically, that most of the goldfish sold that way died too. In my opinion, the brutality you're trying to project onto Chinese culture is in actual fact just honesty compared to our dishonesty and the holier than thou attitude that most western countries have in general.

And regarding Feng Gan Ji, that's in China's past too. Not sure what your point is about others catching up.

And it's massively down to wealth, animal and human rights are expensive.
And china is incredibly poor. It's only due to the number of people that their economy is strong, it doesn't actually mean that they are rich though.

China GDP per capita is only around $4000
I've heard figures of around £5000 per worker, just on workers rights in the uk, let alone human, animal and every other cost to economy if a progressive society, it all has a burden to the economy in lost revenue through extra cost.

Such countries simply can't afford to change over night even if they wanted to. Not that human nature is good with change either. Such things can not be done over night, it's a slow progression. We're just a dozen decades or more further down the line.

As long as they are treated well in life and death, I don't care whether they end up in a box at the bottom of your garden or on a plate.

That's nonsense. Dogs are animals like any other. The distinction between animals that it's okay to eat and those that aren't is entirely human creation.

Some people happily keep chickens as pets and wouldn't dream of eating them. If that were a more common human behaviour, chickens would be off the table for eating too.

By that logic, whan happens when you consider that humans are animals like any other too?
Let me be clear, I'm not saying it's wrong to eat dogs because they are kept as pets. I'm saying we have a special relationship with dogs and on the basis of that relationship we should treat them more like we do humans.

Who are you to say that for humans in general? You can say that it is wrong for you to eat dogs because of your special relationship with them but your moral standing on animals doesn't match mine.

I dont disagree that we should treat animals better but you are saying it is wrong for people in general to eat dogs on the basis of your own personal thoughts on the matter. You can bet the guys who originally domesticated dogs did not share your view.

Dogs may be among the first domesticated animals but oxen/cows/chickens have also been domesticated for thousands of years and have been bred and evolved for our purposes. Where do you draw the line?

You shouldn't assume your empathy towards dogs are shared between all humans, nor should you assume it is the correct way. Cats have been used for thousands of years to keep rodents from getting to food on ships and in homes. Horses were bred and fed to be our travel partners and companions into battle. Humans have used what they have to hand to make life easier for them and have shaped things in their favour for their own benefit. Is our mercy to animals first come first serve?

Exactly. Dogs, our evolutionary partners, are not like any other animal either.

How are dogs our evolutionary partners more than any other animal that has historically close relationships with humans? Cats? Horses? Not sure what bearing that really has on classifying animals are okay to eat or not.

Cause his mum said they didnt have room for a horse and she is allergic to cats, so they ended up getting a dog?

He is projecting his own humanity onto his pet. Perfectly normal but not very logical

If anything, I'd say that we have a closer relationship with an animal we're prepared to eat and trust to provide us sustenance and not kill us in the process than we do with an animal that historically we've mainly used just for transport, keeping pests away or herding the animals that we're going to eat.

You do know that we have used selective breeding on many species for thousand of years? Cows, Chickens, pigs, horses and also the first domesticated animal, sheep. So we should not eat any of those either?

We all share the same core desires, avoidance of injury, freedom of movement, desire for sexual reproduction & garner comfort from companionship (mostly).

If you are against suffering as an isolated state then there is little reason to differentiate between the suffering of one species & another. There is also the other factor that animals on the whole are preferable to people. (at least they have an excuse for being stupid) :D

I don't get bent out of shape over the suffering of one species over another, but then again I abstain from all animal products to avoid the cognitive dissonance that comes with it. Besides, socially meat consumption is on the decline & concern for the welfare of animals increases as societies develop. China is simply less developed on this regard (from a welfare perspective at least).

It's one of the many social issues which time will be the ultimate deciding factor, but personally - the feeling that most of the population will likely be looked back on as barbarians is enough for me to pause & think.

Are you suggesting people eating meat are barbarians ? We are evolved primates and we have evolved as omnivores. Eating meat is not 'barbarian' it's simply part of the natural order we find ourselves in.

I think he is saying our social attitudes are forever evolving and that people in the future may have a view so different to ours, that they might consider us barbarians.

To be fair to the Chinese, we have not been through what they have in their recent history. Millions were starved to death in their revolution and they ate anything to survive so culturally they have less boundaries than we do in the West in our 'land of plenty'

This isn't 'cute and fluffy' syndrome or any rubbish that's been posted here in defence of eating dog meat with barbaric backwards slaughter. Its about the way they are treated and killed, if you haven't seen it then google it because I think a lot of people here are just making assumptions. You can't even compare the slaughter and transport of animals here to there. If you look at the videos of dogs skinned and still moving you might show a bit more compassion. Nothing on that scale of atrocity happens here. Eating it is fine if even the slightest respect is given, its not like it would be particularly hard to change and any petition bringing this awareness has my backing.

It absolutely is cute and fluffy syndrome. If it was what you said it would be a general protest for animal rights. As all other animals over there are equally terribly treated.
So try again.
